The Appeal

Perhaps one of the most iconic cars - and most enduring classics - in automotive history, the R107 needs little introduction. They’re simply one of the most essential classics out there, and one of the most numerous. With their boxy lines, exceptional range of powerplants and simply impeccable build quality, it’s no wonder that they’re still highly prized.
This example is a simply superb piece of preservation, still in its factory finish and still perfectly reflecting how these cars looked when first rolling out of the Stuttgart plant. 

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in 1989
  • Originally based in Cyprus, but was imported to the UK only three months later
  • Only six registered British owners
  • Indicates only 19,936 miles, which is warranted by the car’s history
  • In current ownership for six years
  • Valid MOT until November 2023 with zero advisories
  • The vendor informs us that the car comes complete with:
    • Full service history with a stamped service record book
    • A selection of MOTs
    • A collection of invoices

The Interior

  • Exceptional interior in factory-spec anthracite
  • Burr walnut accents
  • Period instruments throughout
  • Only modification appears to be the addition of a modern Pioneer radio
Presented in simply fabulous order, this interior is almost entirely original, with the only disturbance to the time-capsule appearance being a modern Pioneer Mixtrax system. The rest of the car’s dashboard is perfectly presented in anthracite and walnut, with each instrument clear and readable. 
The raised binnacle is in perfect condition, with deep-set instruments and brightly contrasting needles making for an easy-to-read interface. There are no reports of any faults throughout, and we certainly can’t see anything of concern.
The black MB-Tex seats look in fine order, with no rips or tears and only the odd mark or scratch visible in the material, with much the same visible in the trim. The branded steering wheel is in excellent order with no signs of use we can highlight. There’s the occasional mark to the wood panel’s lacquer, but it otherwise looks in superb fettle. 
The boot is in good condition, and - indeed - the carpets are in good order throughout. It ultimately looks as though the car is ready and waiting to garner reactions at your local car show.

The Exterior 

  • Signal Red paintwork, as applied at the Stuttgart factory
  • Both hard-top and matching soft-top provided, in body colour and black respectively
  • Original factory-fitted Pepperpot alloys
Beautifully finished in Signal Red, this R107’s sharp lines are very nicely picked out with very little wear we’re able to spot. The chromework is bright and nicely kept, and the only weaknesses we can spot are light levels of chipping around the lower extremities of the bodywork, and your standard age-commensurate wear. 
The glasswork and lenses are in excellent order, and the car is provided with a colour-matched hard top - which is in fine order - and a black soft-top, which appears free of rips and tears. The Mercedes-Benz branding is in good condition throughout and helps complete the car’s profile nicely.
Sat atop its original Pepperpot alloys, the car is wearing a full set of superb-looking Michelin tyres, which have no shortage of tread. Underneath, it’s in fine fettle, with nary a spot of corrosion and only the lightest signs of wear, commensurate with the car’s extremely low mileage. 

The Mechanics 

  • Powered by the Mercedes-Benz M117.960 V8 powerplant
  • 4-speed 4G-TRONIC transmission
  • No known mechanical modifications
The burble of a good V8 is a pleasure that all enthusiasts crave, and there’s no argument that the M117 is amongst the best of them. With a superb level of build quality, R107s are still happily roaming the modern network with little concern, and manage to keep up with the traffic nicely. 
This example has plenty of time left on its MOT, which returned with zero advisories. After a look in the engine bay and at its underside, we’re having trouble thinking of anything to highlight - it’s simply such a well-presented, solid-looking car.

Summary

It takes very little to successfully sell an R107 to even the most jaded enthusiast. These are amongst the best Mercedes-Benz products ever built, and this is an excellent example of one almost entirely unmodified. A bonafide time-capsule car that’s sure to impress.
