THE APPEAL

The Peugeot 405 Mi16 created quite a splash when it was released in the early 90’s and was claimed to be one of Peugeot’s best ever sports cars at the time. Although it’s not a hot-hatch nor the more acclaimed GTi, the 405 Mi16 is still a very worthy sports saloon. 
This particular version has been transformed to replicate that of the car driven by Patrick Watts in the BTCC in 1995.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • It was first registered in 1993
  • Purchased by the current vendor in 2018
  • First owned by National Grid, so likely that this car was initially used as a company vehicle
  • In 2007, the owner decided to make it into a vehicle that replicated the car run in 1995 by Total Team Peugeot driven by Patrick Watts
  • The next owner, stripped the interior and installed the roll cage, bucket seats, wheels and suspension
  • It had been used to travel across Europe and attend various events, changing owners a few times and ending up in storage in 2012 where it stayed until the current vendor purchased it in 2018
  • OBD is showing 155,550
  • The car’s most recent MOT is clean and free from advisories
  • We are informed by the vendor that any maintenance work was carried out on their own

THE INTERIOR

  • Simple uncomplicated interior
  • Fully race or track day ready
  • Rare Sparco Competition roll cage that is believed to be period correct 
  • Well presented interior with minimal to no signs of aging
  • Grey suede 320mm steering wheel presents well
  • The steering wheel is also quick release meaning easy access in and out of the vehicle
  • All the gauges, switches and electronics within the vehicle are said to be working as they should do
  • That being said, only the driver’s window works, as all the other doors have had the window mechanisms removed, because race car.
  • Corbeau bucket seats and Sparco harnesses present – these were FIA approved but the dates have now expired
  • Stripped interior, where the rear bench was there is now a roll cage
  • The dashboard is very simple but looks marvellous and presents really well
  • Safety cut off switch is present on the centre console as well as a 12V to charge your phone or any other electrical devices
  • There is no carpet within the vehicle
  • Floor pan is in good condition throughout showing no signs of rust
  • The battery has been replaced, removed from the engine bay, re-routed to the boot and secured via a competition battery box

THE EXTERIOR

  • Paintwork is looking sorry for itself in places but we feel this adds to the race car aesthetic. 
  • The overall presentation of the bodywork is excellent. 
  • There are some imperfections to be aware of. The OSR arch is coming away from the bodywork. 
  • We are informed that the car is totally free from rust with all the panels that were corroded being changed by a previous owner. 
  • The body panels look nice and straight with no signs of damage or corrosion. 
  • The glass and sills are in overall good condition and are holding up well considering the age of the vehicle
  • Underneath, the car looks to be in good, relatively clean condition with no obvious evidence of serious corrosion
  • All lights are presenting well
  • The vendor tells us that the sunroof blank has been replaced as the older one was leaking and letting in moisture
  • Extras include, identical copies of the front and rear spoilers of the 1995 race car that they used at the end of that season
  • Team Dynamic wheels are present on the current car and look to be in good condition
  • There is also a fibreglass front lip and rear spoiler that comes with the vehicle, these have yet to be fitted to the car but would complete the full BTCC aesthetic once fitted

THE MECHANICS

  • Said to start and run well, with no reported mechanical issues to note
  • The vendor reports that the car starts on the button and is one of the best cars that they have owned
  • The car is capable of being used at a track day and making it back home under its own steam
  • Since owning the vehicle it is reported that the car does not leak any fluid at all
  • The vendor reports that the car has recently had a new fuel pump and filter fitted
  • Cam belt and water pump was changed in 2020 and reportedly only covered 1500 miles since that time
  • New fuel lines have reportedly been fitted
  • ABS has been removed to save weight
  • New master cylinder with copper brake lines and brake bias have been fitted
  • Front calipers have been replaced with larger Peugeot 406 SRi/HDI calipers, the originals will come with the car
  • HEL braided brake lines have been fitted
  • Original suspension has been removed in favour of coilovers, new drop links were fitted at the same time
  • The steering rack has been replaced
  • Replacement radiator
  • CV boots replaced

SUMMARY

Whilst this car is far from immaculate, there is no denying that it sure is a head-turner. The current vendor tells us that it’s impossible not to smile when driving this car and that the experience is one that encompasses driving a real BTCC car, with the difference of this one being road legal. 
We're sure that whoever is lucky enough to own this car next will be get just as much enjoyment from it as the current vendor has. It's perfect for using as is, or as an excellent basis to take to the next level.
