The Appeal

Amongst the most coveted of Bentley’s special editions is the Turbo S. A sporting gentleman’s express boasting in excess of four hundred horsepower, Bentley intended to produce 75 examples, although the Bentley Register reports that just 60 were actually sold. Price when new was £137,500 in 1994.

Here we have Turbo S number 51 which is impeccably presented and according to the vendor, in excellent condition throughout. Few cars before or since so competently bring together such immense luxury, style and performance, making this the perfect grand tourer and a credit to the esteemed Bentley badge.

The Interior

Parchment hide upholstery with contrasting Slate piping

As a special edition with a limited run, the Turbo S came even more highly specified than regular Turbo R Bentleys, with a comfortable cabin optimised for making swift progress.

The very supportive seats have more bolster than you see on many Bentleys and are almost infinitely adjustable for position and support. The Parchment hides look to be in fantastic condition for their age and besides a little patination to the driver’s seat, there is remarkably little wear to report. Even the headlining is made from leather, which further adds to the already impressive level of luxury.

We’re infomed the door card design is unique to the Turbo S and so too the dark walnut veneers with gold ‘B’ motif are apparently particular to the model.

The vendor informs us that all the switchgear and indeed all the controls function perfectly and we note there’s little wear to speak of. Overmats in the footwells protect the Granite carpeting.

The Exterior

Resplendent in the rather regal hue of Diamond Graphite, this Turbo S really looks fantastic. Besides a couple of very small scrapes on the bumpers which the vendor pointed out to us, the paint presents immensely well and still exhibits a lustrous shine.

This Turbo S was previously equipped with 17” Ronal wheels although now sports upgrade 18” Bentley alloys to accommodate larger front brakes. The wheels present well, with no significant damage besides the odd kerb mark. We’re informed that the Pirelli P-Zero tyres are brand new and so exhibit virtually no wear.

The Mechanics

The suspension was considerably stiffened up over the Turbo R, and included adaptive front dampers and limited-slip differential

Often the dual pursuit of luxury and speed leads to an awkward compromise but not so with this car. The Turbo S heralded a return to Bentley’s roots and pays homage to their extremely competitive gentleman’s racers from the ‘20s and ‘30s.

The vendor informs us that the engine always starts without hesitation, remaining quiet while effortlessly delivering vast reserves of power. With in excess of four hundred horsepower under the driver’s right foot, this car can really get a move on and the vendor comments that it controls its weight well in the corners too, with sharp steering and a fairly firm ride.

We’re informed that the Bentley drives impeccably with no faults to report. It changes gear smoothly and comes to a stop in a timely fashion thanks to the uprated front brakes. The vendor states that twenty miles to the gallon is achievable if driven gently and this is how the car has been predominantly used.

Summary

With just 29 RHD Turbo S's, this is a scarce opportunity to acquire a meticulously cared for example in with a fantastic specification.

This magnificent Bentley is every bit as impressive in the metal as the photographs suggest. The owner is only selling this cherished car in order to make room for a pre-war Rolls Royce.
