The first two generations of Volkswagen Golf already have a strong and impassioned following, as followers of the German brand have evolved from the air-cooled models to embrace all sorts of older VWs as part of the rapidly evolving Dub-Scene.
Until now, though, the Golf Mk 3 has been one of the more forgotten models – something that is rapidly changing as the remaining examples become fewer and further between.
And that’s what we have here – a Mk 3 GTi, and furthermore a very unusual example as it’s an ‘Anniversary’ – 750 of which were built for the UK market and only 150 with the 2.0-litre 16v engine. The model was made to mark the 20t birthday of the original GTi and featured a unique interior, with red features and checked GTi cloth upholstery.
This one has been tastefully modified in a manner that’s not irreversible should you wish to put it back to standard, but is also evocative of the entire Max Power scene of the late 1990s - itself a rapidly booming area of the classic market.
The Mk 3 Golf’s time is about to come – now is the time to buy one before they go the way of the Mk1 and Mk 2.

SUMMARY
Volkswagens – all Volkswagens – have a following once they get to a certain age and the Mk 3 Golf is right on the cusp of becoming the next big thing. It’s not as instantly recognisable as a Mk 1 or Mk 2 but its affordability and simplicity mean it’s a car that still holds plenty of appeal for VW traditionalists, as well as for younger enthusiasts.
This one is as good as a Mk 3 gets – a genuine special edition, one of only 150 made in this specification, and modified in such a way that it can always be put back to its former standard condition with minimal work. But then, it’s pretty cool as it is!
