The Appeal
The original 986 Boxster finally cracked the problem of giving marque enthusiasts a serious alternative to the 911. It shared a lot of DNA with its sibling, but its balanced mid-engined layout ensured it delivered an entirely different experience.
Early cars are garnering renewed interest, particularly pre-2000 2.5L cars like this smart Guards Red car, because they feature stronger dual-row IMS bearings. It left the factory with the slick 5spd manual box and over £6,000 of options, including the Lux pack, cruise control and high-end sound system, which is still fitted.
The car presents really well, helped in large part by a full respray two years ago and a recently fitted new hood. Less obviously, the a/c condensers have been replaced, so the system works well, making it ideal for summer driving.
The vendor tells us that the car comes with full service history. Although we can’t verify that, the MOT history supports the sense of a well-cared-for car. The current test runs to April 2027 with no advisories.
This is a well-specified and nicely sorted example of a hugely rewarding convertible.
