The Background
The A4 convertible came to replace the Audi 80 convertible that was taken out of the production line in 2000. It had some design inspiration taken from the Audi TT and also from the bigger Audi A6. Many engine options were available from a 1.8T, 1.9 TDi and of course the Buttery 3.0 V6.
Inside, the 2.6 meters wheelbase offered enough room for four passengers. The care featured a dashboard with straight lines to give the sensation of a wide car with wood trim and leather giving a quality and solid feel.IMG_7251.jpg1.82 MB
The History
This particular example was purchased from Chelmsford, Essex when new and has only last year moved north to the Borders.
Having seen 6 owners in its life, it clearly has been well cared for and certainly has not had a hard life covering very little miles which is unusual for this type of car. The vendor purchased it about a year ago and has kept it very well, treating it to a professional valet prior to us seeing it.IMG_7161.jpg661.06 KB
The Paperwork
Plenty of paperwork comes with this car, including many of the original optional extra booklets where the cars options can be seen when purchased. The service book is well stamped with the last stamp being at the time of purchase last year and only covering 1036 miles since.
There is also a £600 invoice for the Timing belt change.
The V5 is up to date along with an MOT certificate that is valid until May 2022.IMG_7267.jpg716.1 KB
The Interior
Upon opening the door you are greeted with the undeniable quality interior of an Audi, plenty of nappa leather and vavona wood amber inlays giving timeless luxury feel. Almost everything is electrically adjustable including the headrests, seat back and driving position.
The Bose sound system sounds as you’d expect, great, and all the screens for the stereo and temperature controls are bright and working well. We were also delighted to see the soft touch coatings on all the dials and interior door handles were in lovely shape and showed little sign of use.
The pale beige nappa leather seats were really good too. The bolsters solid and shapely, very little wear or discolouration on the seats at all, which for this colour was unusual. We were informed everything worked and this seemed to be the case with the exception of the rear parking sensors.
Overall a fantastic example ready to be used, loved and enjoyed.IMG_7201.jpg728.66 KB
The Exterior
This example was finished in Alpaca beige metallic and was definitely well kept. Complemented with satin chrome trims and Audi exclusive 18’’ 9 spoke alloy wheels, it was hard to fault. With just a few very minor car park marks that were hard to spot, the overall look was in top shape.
The alloy wheels were freshly painted, shod in new tyres and suited the car very well. The Beige hood was in decent nick, with no rips or scuffs, though we would say could do with a thorough clean and treatment due to a few marks around the rear screen.
Twin tail pipes were finished in bright polished stainless steel and were original, complimenting the rear very nicely. Though the colour may not be for everyone, it certainly looked the part in the autumn sunshine.IMG_7147.jpg1.48 MB
The Mechanics
Typically when the car started it sounded great, the 220bhp engine bursting into life at the touch of a key. New brakes and tyres were nice to see on al corners giving peace of mind for miles ahead.
The car was serviced a year ago, and as previously stated, only covered 1000 or so miles since. There is evidence of a cam belt change but this was a few years ago. The automatic gearbox worked smoothly and with the option of a manual sport mode too.
There was among the paperwork a receipt for a professional engine tune for 240bhp, a nice addition we thought to give the car something extra for the summer blasts through the countryside and the added bonus of better fuel economy.
Really though we didn’t spot anything on this car of concern and drove and sounded perfectly.IMG_7118.jpg1.02 MB
The Appeal
Top down or top up this Audi is classy, and has a good combination of power and luxury. Many may thing open roof motoring is for the wealthy but with this A4 you can have it all.
Quality sound system, plenty of power on tap, smooth auto gearbox and plenty of room in the boot for your week away….it’s the perfect touring motor and with the low mileage and good service history, it is ready to be enjoyed!
