The Appeal

Unlike its boxy and somewhat under developed P38 predecessor the L322 benefitted from development during BMW ownership and production under Ford oversight. The majority agreed that it was a welcome return to form for the mould-breaking Range Rover. It certainly upped the ante over the outdated underpinnings of its predecessor too. V8 power, six speed automatic transmissions, unibody construction and dynamic air suspension were all common across the range. A new, Range Rover specific diesel V8 power unit was also offered and is present in this example.
This Range Rover is a high specification Vogue SE model so is sumptuously trimmed and generously equipped even by Range Rover standards. This example has covered its miles in a linear fashion and has received annual servicing throughout its history. Additionally it has benefitted from significant and high value preventative maintenance in recent times. An example that wears its age and mileage very lightly, it appears.

The History and Paperwork

  • Our car was registered in May 2010
  • Believed to have been supplied via, then, Land Rover dealers TH White 
  • The Range Rover was subsequently used and enjoyed by six owners
  • This relates to an average tenure of approximately 2 years
  • During its history the Range Rover has averaged a little over 10,000 miles a year
  • The current owner acquired the vehicle in October 2022 to become the seventh owner
  • There is plenty of paperwork included with this Range Rover
  • This includes the current V5 in the name of the owner
  • Numerous previous MoTs in hard copy are also present
  • The current MoT is advisory free and valid until July 2023
  • The original book pack is on hand together with the original service book
  • The latter contains 10 stamps from both Land Rover dealers and independents 
  • Numerous invoices are present, documenting valuable work undertaken
  • These include invoices detailing a gearbox rebuild and refurbish in 2021
  • A full brake service is also documented in 2021, approximately 3,000 miles ago

The Interior

  • The L322 offered a hugely improved interior ambiance over its predecessor
  • Developed under BMW, the materials, fit and finish are sublime
  • Our car’s cabin is clothed in “Jet” black perforated and stitched leather
  • Upholstery inserts are finished in “Grand Black” lacquer
  • The overall condition of this cabin appears excellent for its age and mileage
  • The front seats are fully electrically adjustable in every plane
  • There is a multi-step memory function as well as full seat heating  
  • The rear bench seat is arranged into individually sculpted outer sections
  • The middle section features a folding armrest and storage
  • Rear outer seat bases are heated, and the rear cabin climate is individually controlled
  • The black leather-clad dashboard is awash with switches and controls
  •  A multifunction, four spoke leather steering wheel is present and is electrically heated
  • A multi-function centre screen monitors and controls many functions of the vehicle
  • This includes the satellite navigation and the Harman Kardon 14 speaker, 710 watt sound system
  • Carpets, door cards and headlining appear to be in an equally fine fettle
  • The front carpets have been additionally protected by heavy duty Range Rover mats
  • The huge luggage compartment is accessed by the signature, horizontally split tail gate
  • This area is protected by a fitted, heavy duty rubber liner

The Exterior

  • Our car is finished in Santorini Black Metallic paint work
  • This appears to be in a very good overall condition with plenty of metallic flake evident
  • The paintwork appears appropriately deep and lustrous 
  • The bodywork is generally very good too
  • There are a few age-related small dings and imperfections which are pictured
  • Light lenses and cabin glass all appear original and in a good overall condition
  • Many of the Vogue SE refinements are evident on the exterior of this Range Rover
  • This includes headlamp washers, glass sunroof and front and rear parking sensors
  • Our Range Rover sits on the Vogue SE specific, 20-inch “Style 9” alloy wheels
  • These appear to be in good order throughout and are shod in a matching set of tyres
  • These are quality Pirelli Scorpion Zero items in a 255/50 configuration 

The Mechanics

  • This Range Rover is fitted with the well-received 3.6L, twin turbo, V8 diesel engine
  • This is a powerful unit originally rated at 271bhp and 420 lb-ft of torque
  • This ensures both spirited performance and sensible fuel economy
  • The L322’s mechanical specification is, unsurprisingly, fully fit for the less beaten track
  • This includes height adjustable suspension, locking diffs, hill decent and “Terrain Response” 
  • Power is delivered via a six-speed automatic gearbox
  • This example has clearly been well maintained throughout its history
  • This includes a recent gearbox rebuild and full brake service
  • The under bonnet presentation is generally good, too, suggesting careful ownership
  • The underside of the car is appropriate to its age and could be improved with further attention
  • A towbar mounting and associated electrics are fitted here
  • No mechanical issues were reported with everything understood to be working as it should

Summary

The L322 Range Rover was a triumph, no doubt emphasised by its less convincing predecessor. This was the Range Rover that significantly moved the brand upmarket and doubled down on its desirability as a limousine alternative that could tackle a muddy track with ease. It looked stylish too and was fitted with, for the first time, class leading technology and equipment.
Given that this car was probably well over £70,000 in 2010, this example should offer its lucky new owner astounding value for money. It appears to be a very honest example which has covered its miles very well and has clearly been well maintained and cared for. A vehicle that offers such a breadth of capability and such a depth of specification at such an attainable price is hard to imagine.
