THE APPEAL
The 7th generation Golf GTi is already a well developed ‘hot hatch’, but Volkswagen have taken the sporty concept one step (or indeed several steps) further with the powerful four-wheel drive R.
Outside, the R’s subtle styling tweaks extend to a new front bumper, air intakes, grille, sills, wheels and tailpipes, but what lurks under the bonnet is the most significant advance - the VW 2.0-litre TSI turbo petrol engine producing 296 bhp with an impressive 0-62 time of around 5 seconds and limited to 155 mph - much quicker than the GTi.
Inside, it’s business as usual regarding VW’s renowned quality, comfort and functionality, and includes an abundance of standard equipment and driver aids.
With so many features to mention, this low mileage five-door example has a lot going for it. Presented in stunning Lapiz Blue Metallic, it is in excellent near showroom condition having been clearly looked after by the former owner.
