The Appeal
Produced when the automobile was still in its infancy the Light Six was a great little car produced in the Luton factory. This example must have had an interesting life during the last near 90 years, it is now ready for you to enter into a restoration period to help bring this classic back to its former glory.
If you have ever restored a car, you know that it can be an amazing process with huge rewards at the end. This car will look stunning after you have carried out the necessary work.
The History and Paperwork
- Rolling of the Luton production line in 1936 this Vauxhall has had a very quiet few years
- Interestingly if you look throughout the car there are 14-6 badges throughout, however, the model year would point towards it being a Light Six instead
- You may know more about the model
- It is rather difficult to say much about this Vauxhalls history as the paperwork folder is currently missing
- But it was mentioned that it does have some history somewhere
- Looking online at the MOT history it would appear that this car was on the road between 2006-2012
- It was then purchased by the current owner, who has had it stored in a barn until recently
- It has been bought out of storage and has fired into life after a few years in storage
- An electric fuel pump has been fitted to get it going
- The V5 has been misplaced, so a new one is on the way to the current custodian
- It does require a bit of bodywork, but when you have completed this work, it’ll look amazing
The Interior

The interior of this Vauxhall has been preserved rather well, it could even have had some work carried out in its more recent history. It is also filled with lovely vintage touches from the thin steering wheel to the analogue Smiths dials.
If we start by looking at the scallop shell seats, we can see that there are presented in rather nice condition indeed. The material that has been used to cover them still looks like it has a lot of life left in it. As it has been in long term storage you may wish to undertake a quick interior detail, after this the seats should look lovely and new. There is a small tear to the base of the driver’s seat, but on the whole, they are in good condition. You may wish to change them if you fancy doing a full Concours restoration, but they don’t need your attention right away.
As you sit in the driver’s seat you are sitting behind a rather large thin rimmed steering wheel, at this point you know that you are at the helm of a proper vintage car. The steering wheel is presented well with no cracks to the rim. Sat behind this, in the middle of the dash, are the original Smiths dials. All of these, bar one, are presented very well with minimal marking. As you can see from the photos the rev counter is cracked slightly so could do with some new glass.
Looking at the smaller details such as the headlining and door cards we can see that they are also presented very well for a car of this age. The door cards are finished in the same colour and material as the seats, so they match very well. The headlining complements the dark blue seats well and makes the cabin feel a bit lighter.
Overall, the interior is presented in rather good condition indeed. This area does should not need as much work as other areas of this car.
The Exterior

There is nothing quite like the exterior of a pre-war car, the long bonnet, running boards, and twin headlamps all combine to create a characterful exterior that people can’t help but smile at when they see it. After some bodywork, you should be able to bring this car back to its former glory, who knows it may even be able to win car shows after your hard work.
Finished in a deep blue this example does look good when you add the contrasting black elements. As you can probably see from the photos this car could do with a bit of exterior loving. It could do with a respray, unless you like this patinaed looked, in that case, this would be the perfect car for you. There are also a few areas that may need a bit of rust repair and rush prevention undertaken, but if you’re completing a restoration then you would do this anyway.
A good part of this Vauxhall is that the majority, if not all, of the exterior trim, appears to be still attached to the car. The two front headlamps still have Lucas glass fitted, there is a slight spider crack to the driver’s side glass. The side lights are also still in place on the wings.
After some work has been completed on the exterior of this Vauxhall you could have a show winning classic car.
The Mechanics

Back in the 1930s, the automotive industry had just about found its feet, gone were the hard to drive cars like the Model T and in came the more relaxed and uniform cars that we would recognise today. The Vauxhall Light Six came with two engines, a 1.5l or a 1.8l, according to the online databases’ this car has been fitted with the larger of these two options.
When the car came out of its long sleep, only a little bit of work was needed to get it going. It is now fitted with a modern electric fuel pump to provide a more reliable feed of fuel to the engine. When the photos were taken the car was started up and it idled nicely. It wasn’t seen driving but the current custodian did mention that it has been out on the road, and it drives okay.
If you’re undertaking a restoration on this vehicle, then you may wish to give the mechanical elements a proper service just to make sure that it is all nice and happy. This car should provide you with some very happy motoring memories throughout your ownership.
Summary
This could be a perfect project for you to sink your teeth into, the interior and mechanical elements appear to be nice and presentable and after some bodywork restoration, it should be a great little pre-war car for your collection.
Over your ownership, you should be able to form a nice little bond with this Vauxhall as you tour the country going from classic car show to classic car show.
