If you like big cars, then they don’t come much bigger than this!

First introduced in 1981, the Lincoln Town Car was a full-size luxury sedan that was marketed by the Lincoln division of the American automaker Ford Motor Company. Deriving its name from a limousine body style, Lincoln marketed the Town Car from 1981 to 2011, with the nameplate previously serving as the flagship trim of the Lincoln Continental. 

Produced across three generations for 30 model years, the Town Car served as the flagship sedan of Ford Motor Company, marketed directly against the Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham - cars that were generally liked by traditional older generation folk, or alternatively were used for limousine services and for ferrying around dignitaries.

From 1983 to its 2011 discontinuation, the Town Car was the longest car produced by Ford worldwide, becoming the longest mass-production car sold in North America from 1997 to 2011. this one dates from 1995 and is an iteration of the third generation Town Car. It's vast and full of luxury features, executed in the most American of tastes.

This example has spent more than half of its life in the UK, having been imported here in 2006. Its first British owner lived in Holbeach, Lincolnshire, and kept the car until 2011 when it passed into long term ownership with an owner in Milton Keynes. He maintained it fastidiously until around 2017 when he put the car into storage. It was acquired by the vendor late last year.

It was purchased in need of some gentle recommissioning and it's now up and running with an MOT certificate. It's in good overall condition but it needs some light cosmetic work making it the ideal project if you want an entirely functional, substantial luxury car that you can improve while using. 

There is a huge file of paperwork provided with the Lincoln including the original ‘pink slip’ from West Virginia showing its American registration data.

From 2006 onwards, there are piles and piles of papers documenting work carried out on the car, with bills running well into five figures. Even though in some years the car covered less than 1,000 miles it was serviced annually and the paperwork backs all this up. Many of the receipts are from a well-regarded American car parts specialist and the contact details could very well be useful thing for the next owner of the car to keep on hand.

Also supplied with the car are an original sales brochure and a Chilton Workshop Manual for the Lincoln Continental and Town Car - essentially the US equivalent of a Haynes Manual.

The car is also supplied with a few spares including replacement windows, a radio head unit and a spare rear taillight unit.

The first thing you notice about the Lincoln - and it's very hard to ignore - is its incredible size. In total, the car is over 18 feet long and it's almost six feet wide, which can make it quite tricky to place on the road when you consider it's also left-hand-drive.

It has quite an imposing presence and looks great in its greyish green metallic paint, which is actually quite subtle for one of these.

Structurally, it's in good order and the floors and sills appear to be very solid, whilst overall the condition of the body isn't bad. However, it will need some attention in certain areas. The chrome door trim finishers on both sides of the car are damaged and loose and will need replacements sourcing, while there are also a few areas of lacquer peel and paint deterioration that will require attention if you want to turn it into a show car. If you just want something that’s like no other car on the road and that you can use and enjoy, then these cosmetic defects might not put you off as it's a strong, solid and otherwise well-presented example.

The chrome finish alloy wheels are all in good condition and all of the trim is present and correct, while it also has a digital keypad on the driver’s door allowing you to open it with a PIN number instead of a key. Yes, it's a gimmick - but it's a good one to show off!

The green theme continues inside with even the dashboard and steering wheel finished in the colour, alongside huge and squidgy bottle green leather seats. Even the dials light up green in an LCD display in front of the driver. 

The space on offer is incredible and the seats are as comfortable as they look, albeit not a supportive way. Sitting inside it is like relaxing on the sofa, which is probably quite appropriate given the car’s unhurried dynamics and soft suspension. It's a car that's all about luxury and comfort and it pulls it off brilliantly, and with a unique style that only a large American sedan could pull off.

The Lincoln has wanted for nothing during its life and the servicing it has received has been incredible. Given that power comes from a fairly straightforward Ford-sourced 4.6-litre V8, that means there should be very little for the next owner to worry about, not least because the car has also just been given a full service and a brake overhaul by the vendor.

He reports that the car is like nothing else to drive and that while it likes to roll in corners and has a very soft ride, it's actually very easy to drive thanks to its column change automatic gear shift and extremely laidback nature. It's a car that you can simply sit in waft along, enjoying levels of comfort that you'll struggle to find anywhere else.

A big old American tank like this won't appeal to everybody, but for those who like their cars large, quirky and unusual this is an absolutely fabulous thing and it's impossible not to notice it coming down the road.
