The Appeal
The Golf's 4th generation was intended to take the legendary hot-hatch into an upper market position - something exalted by the Highline specification, with its leather cabin, heated seats and Xenon headlights. Though it might have upset a few purists in its day, there's little doubt that the 'new' Golf was a superb success for Volkswagen, and quickly gained a dedicated following in its own right.
This particular 2002 Golf Highline has been with the current keeper for over 13 years. In this ownership, the vendor has maintained a very extensive service history, covering recent significant work including a new A/C compressor and a £1,900 service at VW. Combined with the service record book, we've got a comprehensive look at the car's heritage. While the car is carrying some age-commensurate wear, it's still a solid, capable presence on the asphalt.

The Condition
This generation of the Golf still holds up very well today - it's stylish, sleek, and endearing alike
The bodywork has some scuffs and scratches and would benefit from a refurb
Paintwork is looking somewhat tired
Factory-supplied Santa Monica alloys are looking rather tired
Underside appears solid with some age-commensurate wear
Leather heated sports seats
Some stitching on the rear seat has come adrift
Seats could do with a clean and treatment, otherwise no rips or tears
Cabin patina commensurate with age and use
Sport options include lowered suspension, Santa Monica alloys, Xenons, headlamp washers, and Highline features
The Mechanics
2,324cc V5 engine
Automatic transmission with 5 gears
The vendor notes that the 3rd gear on the auto box rarely engages and will need reconditioning
There is a small oil leak between the engine and gearbox
Slight knock from suspension, possibly strut top, on full lock
Other than this, the car is reportedly driving well
The vendor informs us that it is an excellent cruiser with a rock-solid feel and a very decent turn of speed
Ultimately, after some work we think this will be a superb, eminently drivable example
