"At the 1985 Milan Show, the new Vespa two-stroke direct injection engine, developed over the previous ten years, was introduced. In that same year the P series was updated with two model lines, the K and extra-features X line." - Dregni & Dregni, Illustrated Motor Scooter Buyer's Guide.
The Vespa T5 was a radical departure from the brand's traditional styling, featuring more angular lines and a high-performance 125cc engine boasting five transfer ports, hence the 'T5' designation. The 'Pole Position' model name originated from Piaggio's sponsorship of Formula 1, where drivers achieving pole positions were awarded a Vespa, linking the scooter to motor racing culture and intended to make it more collectible.
As well as its five transfer ports, the T5 engine featured an aluminium cylinder barrel with Nikasil-plated bore, a larger carburettor, and a performance exhaust. Thus equipped the T5 could reach 70mph under favourable conditions, making it significantly faster than the regular PX125, which struggled to exceed 52-57mph. Unlike the contemporary PK models, which had four-speed automatic transmissions, the PX models featured a four-speed manual gearbox. Some versions had generator-only electrics while others came with a battery, the latter type being equipped with an electric starter. Notable for its speed and handling, the high-performance T5 was a big hit, especially with younger riders, and nowadays is recognised as standout model in Vespa's history and highly collectible. Production ended in 1999.
Currently displaying a total of 13, 006 kilometres on the odometer, this Vespa was purchased by Johnny several years ago and has not been used since. Careful recommissioning will be required before returning it to the road. No previous history is known. Offered with Italian registration document.
