The Appeal 

Fiat’s 1100 of 1953 represented a new dawn for the company - the firm’s first unibody car with a full ‘pontoon’ body. There were saloon, estate, convertible and pick up versions, all of which proved successful due to their simplicity and reliability. 
Early cars from 1953 to 1956 featured Fiat’s distinctive ‘Mussone’ pointed front end styling, which had been pioneered pre war on the 2800. They also got the distinctive ‘suicide’ rear hinged doors that made entry and exit easier - a particular boon for buyers of the commercial pick up. 
The Industriale pick up rowed back on the innovations, switching to a separate chassis that was heavier, longer and wider for the tough work these vehicles were subjected to. 
This gorgeous 1955 Industriale features the early Mussone styling. It was restored in 2020 - including a full engine rebuild - when the wooden rear body was replaced with the narrow metal one you see in the photographs. It is clear that this work was done to a very high standard, including fabrication a ‘Fiat’ decal into the rear door and including lockable stowage pods on either side. 
The interior is finished to a similarly  With careful use since - it has been used for rallies - it has proved entirely reliable and remains much as it was the day the restoration was completed. This is a fantastic - and practical - alternative to more conventional classic saloons and convertibles. 

The History and Paperwork

  • We understand that this is a 1955 1100
  • The styling places this as a 1953 to 1956 1100
  • It appears to be a high specification Tipo B with exterior chromework 
  • Comprehensive bodywork restoration in 2020 
  • At this time it was converted from wooden rear body to metal 
  • Engine rebuilt at the same time so odometer is not accurate for the engine’s use 
  • Body parts were sourced from the USA for the restoration 
  • Restored by a model specialist in Italy 
  • Braking system overhauled during restoration, including fitting a new pump 
  • Has been used by the seller for classic car rallies and proved fully reliable 

The Interior

  • Beautifully restored interior with tasteful upgrades that suit its period style
  • Attractive two-tone styling blends bronze wheel and bezel highlights with body colour
  • Switchgear and dials appear original and present very well 
  • Original seat shells retrimmed in light green leather to match exterior 
  • Cream carpets professionally trimmed
  • Bronze marble-effect vinyl trim to rear bulkhead and side window surrounds
  • Cream vinyl headlining in good condition 

The Exterior

  • Industriale model with wider body necessitating extended front wings 
  • Early ‘Mussone’ style with distinctive pointed and fluted grille 
  • Restored to a very high standard by a model specialist in Italy
  • Attractive light green ‘gellato’ paintwork with contrasting white roof 
  • Converted from wooden to metal rear deck
  • All metalwork fabrication has clearly been done to a high standard
  • Remains in superb condition with no visible scuffs, marks or deterioration 
  • The specification includes ‘Fiat’ logo worked into rear door and side stowage pods
  • Great detailing including spare fuel can neatly held in place with leather strap 
  • Lovely ‘Millecento’ badge on rear door
  • New tyres all round with spare wheel under rear deck 
  • Black steel wheels with chrome hub caps in well kept condition 
  • Original chromework complete and well presented with good shine 
  • ‘Suicide’ rear hinged doors typical of early 1100s
  • Two rear stowage pods, one on each side and both lockable
  • Wooden slats to base of rear deck showing only very slight delamination 
  • Underside presents well with good treatment of underseal and no issues to report 

The Mechanics 

  • 1,089cc OHV 4cyl Fiat engine developing 34bhp 
  • 4spd manual gearbox with synchromesh on three gears and column shift
  • Side exit exhaust with stylish three branches
  • Single carburettor 
  • Engine rebuilt during restoration 
  • We are told that this is a matching numbers vehicle 

Summary

Fiat’s 1100 played a critical role in the firm’s development, ushering in a new way of building and designing cars. The Industriale is now particularly rare as most of these pick ups were driven into the ground in period. 
This beautiful ‘Millecento’ has clearly been restored to a very high standard. The conversion is particularly attractive and the interior trimmed with flare. Clearly cared for in the short period since it looks ready to wow spectators at shows and rallies in the hands of a new owner.
