The Volkswagen Split Screen stands out as one of the most iconic and instantly recognizable vans, buses, or pickups ever produced. Its development commenced in 1948, culminating in the release of the T1 model for general sale by Volkswagen in 1950. Originally named the "Transporter," it wasn't until the vibrant 1960s that the VW T1 gained immense popularity, becoming closely intertwined with the influential cultural movement of that era.

 The T1 boasted low operating and maintenance costs while offering a place to call home on the road. It has since become known as the "Camper" and had diverse applications, including use as ambulances, transport vehicles, and panel vans for various commercial enterprises.

This 1965 example was purchased by an Automotive College as a restoration project. The work was carried out by students and skilled teachers who restored the T1 back to its former glory. Since completion, the bus has been used as a demonstration/promotional vehicle for the college up until it was time for a new project to be started, which is when this T1 was sold to our vendor.

Inside, the T1 presents well, having been fully retrimmed in medium grey material and vinyl. The seats are all in excellent condition with no real signs of wear or damage. All the door cards and panelling have been matched to the seats and are also in good order.

The dashboard is finished in white to match the top half of the bus, and there is a period Blaupunkt radio present. The instruments appear to be the originals, along with the switchgear, which has some light patina. The steering wheel is also thought to be the original and does have some wear to the rim and the odd small crack towards the centre.

The flooring has been covered in rubber matting, which fits well and is easy to keep clean. There is more rubber matting in the boot area along with the spare wheel.

The bus's exterior has been finished in white over bright red, which looks fantastic. The front bumper is finished in white to match the top half and is free from any damage. The headlights have a bright finish to the reflectors and chrome surrounds, and the indicators are free from any splits or cracks. The split-screen windscreens are in good order with no noticeable scratches, and the seals appear to be in good condition.

Around to the sides, looking down the bus is nice and straight with no dings or dents. The panels align well, and there is an equal gap around the doors. All of the side windows open as they should, and like the front, the seals look to be in good condition with no perishing. The mirrors and door handles are free from tarnishing and have a bright finish.

At the rear, like the front, the bumper is damage-free and finished in white. The rear door and engine cover align nicely with an equal gap. Both rear lights are free from damage, and the window, like the rest, is scratch-free with a good seal. The steel wheels are colour-coded white and finished with chrome hubcaps that are in excellent condition. The tyres are all matching and in like-new condition.

Fitted with the classic 1600 air-cooled engine on engine number 0728962, this is said to fire up without hesitation and runs with no issues reported. There has been a new coil, distributor cap, and HT leads fitted.

The four-speed gearbox changes as you would expect, and the bus pulls well through the gears. The braking system has been overhauled with new hoses, which now bring the bus to a stop in a straight line, and there have been no issues reported. Looking at the underside, the floor area looks to be in good condition with no areas of concern.

A beautifully restored 1965 split-screen T1 that has seen many hours of work carried out by enthusiastic students and teachers who wanted to do the best they could to create their college promotional vehicle, and what a fantastic job they have done!
