The Appeal
Introduced in 1950 as Volkswagen’s second series-production vehicle, the Type 2 would go on to become one of the most recognisable and best-loved vehicles ever built. More than 12.5 million examples were produced during its extraordinary lifespan, with the final vehicle leaving the Brazilian production line in 2013.
Few vehicles have embedded themselves so deeply into popular culture. Equally at home carrying families on summer holidays, surfers in search of the next beach, or adventurers heading far beyond the beaten path, the Type 2 became far more than a simple form of transport. Over the decades, it has come to symbolise freedom, exploration and a more relaxed approach to life on the road.
This 1966 Splitscreen presents as a particularly impressive example. Commissioned by its long-term seller at a reported cost of more than £95,000, the restoration and conversion were clearly carried out with considerable care, attention and imagination.
Finished in an attractive red-and-cream colour scheme that continues into the cabin, it features a beautifully executed bespoke interior complete with handmade wooden cabinetry, Amtico flooring, a slide-out bed and an impressive array of amenities, including a concealed fridge, slide-out cooker, and even a coffee machine.
Owned by the seller since 2007 and enjoyed both before and after its restoration, this Splitscreen is now ready for its next chapter. Whether used for weekend escapes, festivals, classic car events or longer European road trips to destinations such as Le Mans or Spa, it promises to deliver many more memorable miles in unmistakable style.image.png1.42 MB
