The Appeal
For Fast Ford fans seeking something a little less frenetic than the Sapphire Cosworth, there was the XR4x4. Based on the five door hatchback bodystyle - rather than the Cossie’s 4dr shape - the XR4x4 was designed to be altogether more luxurious and smoother. This V6-equipped all-wheel drive saloon was the blue oval’s quality riposte to its German rivals.
The later XR4x4 got an updated version of the trusty, rumbly Cologne V6 with capacity increased to 2.9L and a reliable EFI fuel injection system delivering 160bhp. This smart Diamond White 1989 car has that later powerplant and is in remarkable timewarpm highly original condition.
The quality of presentation is down to the low number of keepers and the very sparing mileage of under 57,000 miles in its 36 years. Inside and out it is a well kept car, the interior - usually prone to deterioration of the grey fabric - being particularly good.
The engine and gearbox are reported to work well and the car benefits from recent servicing, a new battery and a replacement thermostat and fan. The temperature gauge sender has also been replaced.
The XR4x4 is a rarity these days and this one looks like a great survivor.
