The Appeal

The E34 was proof that even captains of industry can let their hair down. At the end of a tiring working day, when the spreadsheets and strategising were over, they could jump into their M5s, hear the reassuring clunk of a carefully engineered door thud shut, and firmly wig out.

The E34 is a four-door luxury saloon with the heart of a sports car. Brutally quick, supremely nimble and genuinely engaging, it is also one of the best ‘analogue’ versions of BMW’s M cars. No surprise then, that good examples are sought after.

And this is a very good example. Recently released from a BMW enthusiast’s collection, it is beautifully finished in attractive Macao Blue - which shows blue, purple or black depending on the light - with a linen grey leather interior. The condition belies the passage of 33 years since it left the showroom.

That is thanks, in part, to £11,000 of recent fettling. That work includes servicing, a new clutch and slave cylinder, a new exhaust system—costing £2,332 alone—attention to the gearbox oil, electrics, diagnostic repairs, and a new heater fan switch and blower motor. This car has wanted for nothing, earning plaudits at many local car shows.
