The Appeal
A Mercedes-Benz R129 500SL is cool, but a black Mercedes-Benz R129 500SL? Well, that's in polar bear toes territory. Built to replace the ageing R107 SL series, Mercedes employed the skills of designer Bruno Sacco to style the R129. Based upon the shortened floorpan of the W124 and featuring a whole host of technical advancements for the time, the R129 continued M-B's run of cracking, well-built sports cars.
Debuting in 1988 the sleek R129 was available with the usual array of Mercedes inline-six and eight-cylinder engines - there was even an AMG V12 - but the 5.0-litre V8, as found in the 500SL, is where it's at.
Combine that sweet, 326bhp powerplant with the aforementioned black bodywork and you're on to a winner and this 1992 convertible cuts quite the dash. Well-presented throughout and with full service history it looks to be a bit of a peach.
