The Appeal

In the glorious history of Aston Martin, there can be few cars as important as the DB7. Widely recognised as “the car that saved Aston”, it remains a stunning piece of design and a keenly sought-after machine, particularly in V12 form.

And that is precisely what we have here – a wonderfully elegant and well maintained example of the 6-litre V12 DG7. But this is even more special than that. As the DB7 came towards the end of its life, Aston Martin put together the GT (manual) and GTA (automatic) special editions. Effectively these were run-out models, offering the best of everything the DB7 platform had to offer, and were highly exclusive.

In fact, the UK-spec GTA model was the rarest of them all, with just 60 examples being built. As such, this is now an incredibly uncommon car – a true collector’s piece, and to be presented with one in such exceptional condition and with less than 24,000 miles on the clock is quite unheard of.

So for anyone who wants to add a piece of Aston – and indeed UK motoring – history to their collection, something that is a phenomenal car in its own right but also a highly desirable rarity, this has to be considered.

Look at that, we got all the way through the appeal and didn’t mention James Bond once.

Oh, damn it.

We love the winsome two-tone Bridge of Weir leather in this DB7 – the blue and light grey offering a smart contrast to the metallic grey paintwork. It all looks to be in near-pristine condition too, with the merest hints of wear and use on display. The 2+2 layout makes it a truly practical machine too, with plenty of space for luggage or children in the rear.

Neatly complementing the leather are dark blue carpets and matched floor mats, again presenting in lovely condition, with no notable wear or staining in evidence. Meanwhile the headlining and sun visors are trimmed in neat, light grey Alcantara which shows no signs of sagging, damage or staining and looks to be in near-new condition.

As with all GTA models, oak veneers adorn the cabin and look to be in excellent order, with no warping, cracking or delamination we could see. Similarly, all of the aluminium switchgear and other controls look to be in fine fettle, with little wear showing and no faults or issues reported by the vendor. In fact, the only minor issue we noted in the cabin is that the LCD display of the odometer appears to have lost some pixels.

The boot space is impressive and certainly gives the DB7 driver plenty of options when it comes to filling up on luggage – there should be no lack of space for that St Moritz trip. The boot is trimmed in dark grey carpeting, all showing in clean and neat condition, while under the carpet is the battery and the Silverstone 6CD changer.

The subtle yet muscular lines of the DB7 are wonderfully well enhanced by the metallic grey paintwork of this car. It all looks to be in superb condition too, try as we might we could barely spot a single scuff or mark. We’re sure there probably is the odd minor blemish or stone chip, but if so they’re so negligible that they’re not worthy of mention.

With a steel structure, weight is minimised by the use of composite panels. So the front wings, sills, boot lid and the front and rear bumper sections all benefit from the use of composite construction. Every panel looks clean and straight, and we didn’t see any evidence of corrosion or damage. Panels gaps are consistent and even, while all of the trim and badging appears to be present and in a very fine state.

From the paperwork we can see that the front windscreen was professionally replaced by Stratstone in 2014, and all of the glass and light lenses do look very clean with no chips or cracks we could discern.

We love the silver-finish, 19-inch, nine-spoke alloy wheels. We think they give the car a very fine stance and they present very well, with no kerb damage or lacquer peel on display. They are shod in a fine matched set of Yokohama Advan Sport tyres, the front ones fitted in April 2021 and having covered very few miles since.

What could be more delightful for any true enthusiast than the idea of a howling V12 singing away up front? Not much, in our opinion. The GTA’s engine is presented in Vantage tune, which means 420hp and 400lb-ft is delivered to the rear wheels from that all-aluminium, 60-degree V12.

The results are, unsurprisingly, blistering – 0-62mph in 5.1 seconds and a 165mph top speed. More than enough to thrill in any grand tourer and certainly enough to leave you both shaken and stirred.

We’re assured by the vendor that the car runs very well, with no mechanical issues reported and a fine history of servicing and maintenance. Some notable expenditure in recent times includes:

April 2016: new left and right blower motor assemblies
August 2022: full service, sump cleaned and refitted, PAS leak fixed, new auxiliary belt along with pulleys and the tensioner

Summary

As one of 60 made for the UK, this GTA is a most covetable machine, presented in superb overall condition and in a truly desirable specification. We think this must rank as one of the prettiest grand tourers ever built, certainly that V12 is one of the most soulful powertrains we’ve come across. With less than 24,000 recorded miles and a very fine service record, we can’t think of many better ways to enhance your collection…
