After the first series of Corvettes built from 1953 to 1955 brought an American manufacturer into the sports car market, it was the second series, which made its debut in 1956, that truly earned the title of “America’s Sports Car.” The clean good looks of Harley Earl’s new design struck a chord with the American public, and it quickly outsold the older style by a margin of three to one. In addition, Zora Arkus-Duntov and Chevrolet Engineering dramatically altered the personality of Chevrolet’s sports car with a renewed focus on performance thanks to a growing range of powerful small-block V8s and improved handling.
For 1958, the Corvette also added greater comfort, and its appearance was slightly revised by Harley Earl with 1958-only touches. The louvered “washboard” hood treatment and twin chrome deck lid strips were consistent with the styling trends of the era, though only lasted a year due to GM-mandated year-to-year trim changes. The 283-cubic inch V8 ensured the old Blue Flame Six days were long gone, allowing the Corvette to remain highly competitive on both the street and the race track. Not surprisingly, the Corvettes from this series are among the most collectible models of the first-generation Corvettes.
The superb 1958 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster featured here is finished in stunning Silver-Blue with Silver coves over a Blue-Grey interior with a White folding convertible top.
