The Appeal

Imitation, according to Oscar Wilde, is the sincerest form of flattery. In the case of the 240Z this didn’t lead, as Wilde pre-supposed, to mediocrity, but instead to a greatness that arguably far exceeded its influences.

Blending ideas from Jaguar’s E-Type and Chevrolet’s Corvette gave buyers a quick, nimble car that was, above all, more reliable and durable than either of those. That it looked really good to, establishing a lineage that lasted decades, certainly helped.

This car is where it all started. It is chassis number 99, first registered in Australia in 1971 where it was extensively restored in 1999 with a firm emphasise on sympathetically preserving its originality.

The car arrived in the UK in 2018 and has remained with the same enthusiast keeper ever since. He commissioned a £17,000 renovation three years ago that covered virtually every area of the car. You’ll find a helpful list of the work in the photos - it runs to four carefully annotated A4 pages. The work included professional repair of the high-compression cylinder head and renewing the gearbox synchromesh. A voluntary MOT to June 2026, with no advisories, underlines the provenance.

Unlike some of the cars that influenced it, the joy of a good 240Z is that it drives as well as it looks. This car adds historic significance to its compelling appeal.

The smart green paintwork of this car provides a neat complement to the extensive bright chromework. Both were restored during the car’s renovation, receiving light improvements three years ago as part of the £17,000 refresh. It is a very pretty car, helped by a set of smart Minilites that freshen and modernise the aesthetics.

Beyond the svelte GT lines the black vinyl interior is beautifully preserved and, we are told, highly original. There is even a period radio and the original clock, both of which we are told work correctly. Lovely detailed abound like the quilted rear turret covers and the deep dish wood-rimmed wheel. A proper treat for enthusiasts of period car details.

Some Japanese cars of the time were criticised for being a little show and no go. Not so the 240Z. Its silky straight six delivered 155bhp, more than enough for this light and nimble car to run rings around Detroit’s contemporary muscle cars, not to mention most of Britain’s sporting fayre.

This car is said to be a matching numbers model and received an extensive mechanical overhaul during its restoration in 2021. The work included professionally rebuilding the high compression cylinder head and rebuilding the gearbox synchromesh. You’ll find a very long list of all the work undertaken in the photos - it is well worth a look, but we recommend grabbing a brew as it will take you a while.
