The Appeal
The original air cooled 911 is one of motoring’s most enduring icons, a car that was continuously improved by the maker throughout its long life. That didn’t stop specialists getting in on the act, offering upgrades and improvements to enhance the capabilities of this remarkable car still further.
This car began life as a 1982 SC but in recent years has been subjected to significant restoration and improvement by marque specialist Steve Monk. This has included an engine bore out and rebuild to 3.2litres, gearbox rebuild, drivetrain overhaul, new suspension and brake system and fitting a LSD. the car has been rolling road tested to 256bhp.
Looking cleverly stock and suitable for use on road, track or hill climb, this is a very versatile 911. It will surely be very rewarding for the lucky buyer.
The History and Paperwork

The Exterior

- Chips on centre of front bumper
- Chips on offside corner of front bumper
- Crack in bumper trim on nearside front corner
- Poor paint on nearside sill at rear end

The wide body 911 shape added more purpose and poise to the car’s well-established profile. And bright red was one of the most popular colours for this car through the 1980s.
The restoration work by Steve Monk appears to have focussed on the mechanicals but the bodywork remains in remarkably good condition. This car has only been used sparingly for competitive work which likely explains why it looks so presentable. It appears to have been fitted at a later date with Turbo front and rear bumpers and the iconic ‘whale tail’ spoiler.
There are some minor areas of deterioration and marks but nothing of any significance and none that detracts from the impression created by the photographs. There are some chips on the front bumper and spoiler and a couple of areas of small rust bubbles.
The car sits well on its white alloy wheels with quality Toyo rubber. The wheels are lightly kerbed but not enough to detract from the overall look.
The Mechanics
- Rebuilt all-aluminium flat six Porsche engine bored out to 3.2litres like the later Carrera models
- The aluminium casing made this engine more reliable than previous generations

The mechanical overhaul was undertake by Steve Monk, a well-known figure in Porsche circles and former race engineer and championship-winning driver. The work is listed above and delivers 256bhp according to rolling road data.
The car was prepared for its then-owner who was unable to complete the project. It was then bought for the value of the work - £30,000 - by a friend of the vendor, before passing to the vendor earlier this year. It has covered few miles since the work was completed and has had very limited competitive use.
Summary
The 911’s reputation as a proper driver’s car meant that Porsche continually evolved it to meet demand. For some, however, that was not quite enough and an army of specialist improvers grew up around the model.
This car has been carefully upgraded by one of those specialists. It cleverly blends virtually stock aesthetics with the versatility of road or track use. With little use since the work was completed it is a great opportunity to buy a specialist-enhanced classic air cooled 911.
