The Appeal
The quality of presentation of this ‘Big Six’ is such that it’s hard to know whether to simply stand and admire it or get in and drive it. And, as Citroën enthusiasts will know, the temptation to do the former is strong, because this car is one of just 1,254 ‘Big Six’ built in Slough, with an array of unique locally fitted details that make them particularly visually compelling. As a 1950 car, it is also one of the sought-after ‘malle plate’ small boot models.
The Big Six was pitched as the Traction Avant’s luxury model, equipped with the powerful 2.9L straight-six and aimed at wealthy families and titans of industry. The Slough cars pushed the plushness yet further with Connolly leather, a veneer dashboard and beautiful Rubery Owen steel wheels. These UK cars also got more reliable 12V electrics. Most were fitted with round Smiths dials, but this car has Jaeger units, often fitted to Slough cars because of supply problems.
This 1950 car is one of just 370 built at Slough that year, according to records, and among a mere handful of all UK Big Six cars that found their way to South Africa. It remained there until 2013, when the seller returned it to the UK and has owned ever since. On arrival, it was extensively restored to an exceptionally high standard and at considerable cost, as the history file shows. The work carefully preserved or renewed the original Slough features, as shown in our photos. The work included an engine and gearbox rebuild, a new crown wheel and pinion, a replacement clutch, a drive shaft, and a brake overhaul. It remains largely standard save for the useful addition of power steering.
This car has been regularly MOT’d since arriving in the UK, reflecting the vendor's approach to maintenance, even though it wasn't legally required. The current test runs to June 2027 with no advisories. This is an exceptional example, in a desirable ‘blue on blue’ colour scheme, that we’re confident will impress discerning marque collectors.
The vendor says:
“Fitted with power steering, electric fan and water pump, it is a joy to drive.”
