The Appeal
For a brief four years in its 50-year lineage, Ford offered the only four-door variant of its illustrious ‘personal luxury’ Thunderbird. Known as the Landau, these stylish clap-door ‘Bunkie Beak’ land yachts sold steadily, with 6,553 finding buyers in the same final model year as this Pascal Yellow car.
Beyond that rarity, it is especially notable because 1971 was the last year Ford offered the high-compression version of its gargantuan 429CI 7L big-block V8, which puts 360bhp through the rear wheels via the 3-speed Cruise-o-matic automatic. It also has the rare Brougham Interior Trim Package, which added $1,500 to the base car’s $5,516 price. This brought upgraded leather and individually operated high-back rear seats amongst other luxuries.
This is a 1970-registered, 1971 model-year car that the buyer sourced in Spain in 2025, shipped to the UK, and registered in 2026 on British plates. The vendor reports it starts well and drives easily, with no mechanical modifications. The vendor describes the exterior as presenting well, while the interior is particularly well preserved for an American car of this era. It is largely standard except for a more modern radio. A voluntary MOT valid to April 2027 adds transparency for buyers.
With 42,420 miles on the odometer, which the vendor believes is correct, this Thunderbird offers an opportunity to enjoy a slice of American motoring heritage on UK roads.
