The Appeal
The essential rightness of Mercedes-Benz’ remarkable R107 is evidenced by how suitable these cars remain for daily driving despite early examples now being over 50 years old. Handsome, comfortable and reliable, it is no surprise that good, low mileage examples remain in high demand.
While there were a vast range of R107s available, America tended to get the big-engined V8s. Thanks to often residing in dry states many of these cars are now being repatriated for the enjoyment of us Europeans.
This 1978 450SL has recently been imported from the USA and retains its American title and plates. Finished in an unusual but very suitable two-tone blue colour combination it is a low mileage car in timewarp condition. Little recent use means it would benefit from a check over and service, but once done it offers the buyer all the rewards of these stately classic convertibles.
The History and Paperwork
- 1978 4.5litre V8 SL with Federal specification including large bumpers
- Recently imported to the Netherlands by the vendor
- Remains on USA plates and with USA title
- Full set of original factory handbooks in good condition
- Additional USA registration documents as shown in the photographs
- The vendor tells us that it runs, shifts and drives correctly
- Howevet the idle is not smooth and the vendor recommends a service
- Little used in recent months so a check over would be advisable
- Some service work and recommissioning undertaken by the seller
The Condition
- Smart light blue paintwork unusual for this model and works particularly well
- No visible rust or corrosion reflecting its life in a dry state and low mileage
- Black fabric soft top in good condition with clear, undamaged screens
- Small mark visible on rear screen
- Hardtop in matching colour with good paintwork and internal headlining trim
- Desirable optional 15in Mexican Hat alloy wheels present well
- Recently fitted brand new whitewall tyres
- Underside presents well with no issues to report
- Chromework and glasswork well kept with no visible deterioration
- Lights generally well kept but with cracks visible in rear reflectors
- Blue leather interior is original and generally in good condition, only minor aging to note
- There is a small crack on the right hand side of the dashboard
- Some damage visible to driver’s seat
- Centre console veneers deteriorated but remaining veneers good
- Carpets present well across cabin and boot area with no noticeable staining
- Factory tool kit appears complete and largely unused
- Matching alloy spare wheel which we are told is new
- Modern Sony stereo fitted
The Mechanics
- Powerful 4.5litre M116 Mercedes-Benz V8 engine
- 3spd automatic gearbox
- New accumulator and reconditioned fuel distributor recently fitted
- Oils, filters and front brake pads recently replaced
- Car has been stationary for some time
- It runs, brakes and shift correctly would benefit from servicing and tune up
