The Appeal
If further proof were needed that Volkswagen’s quirky Type 2 camper gets under your skin, here it is. This well-presented 1979 Westfalia has been with the current keeper since it was imported to the UK from Germany in 2001. Repainted in its original Lime Green and with a magnificent refurbished Westfalia checkered green and yellow cabin, it is a great reminder of just how good an unmodified, highly original T2 can be.
The history file shows a long list of work, including a full respray in the original colour and a 2021 overhaul of the roof, interior and seals that cost close to £5,000. In 2023, it received a new ignition coil and distributor, and in April 2025, there was over £1,200 of work, including general checks, full service and four new tyres.
The photos show that the result of all that investment is a really tidy van with the usual Westfalia practicality. Beneath the rear lid is a usefully powerful 2L 4cyl engine with twin Webers, an upgrade that addresses the standard T2’s lack of oomph. The van is tax exempt by age but comes with a useful recent MOT from April 2025 that contained no advisories.
For those seeking a well-maintained, long-term-ownership Bay Window Westfalia with genuine German provenance, this one is well worth a closer look.
