1997 Saab 900 Convertible, 2. 3L petrol automatic
95, 000 miles. Monte Carlo Yellow. 12 months MOT.
This is my Saab 900 convertible, which I have owned for about 2 and a half years. We have enjoyed two summers with the car, including a trip up to Inverness in the Scottish Highlands, but now fancy something different so here is a chance for another family to enjoy the delights of classic Saab open-top motoring.
The most striking thing about the car is the colour, which is in the classic Saab colour called Monte Carlo Yellow. It always gets comments wherever I go!
This car has the Saab 2. 3L petrol engine, with 150bhp, coupled to a very smooth 4-speed automatic gearbox. Black leather interior, wood trim on the dash, genuine Saab wind deflector with leatherette carrying case.
The roof works perfectly, and is a fully mechanical system on these 900s (when the 9-3 facelift came in 1998, this changed to hydraulic system which often has leaks).
Everything electrical works, including the heated rear window and heated door mirrors. Both keys present and both remote fobs work fine. Radio code present. Reverse parking sensors.
Mechanically, the car has recently been serviced with an oil change, and has a recent distributor cap, rotor arm and brand new automatic transmission fluid. Last year the front coil springs were replaced because one of them was cracked, and a new rear tyre fitted. Also in 2018 the car got brand new front brake discs, pads, a caliper, wheel bearing and wheel hub with a bill of £580, as well as some bodywork repairs. In 2018 the car also was fitted with a new rear exhaust silencer, new battery, and both front tyres replaced with Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres. Recent brand new front indicator lenses.
Bad bits:
The only minor niggle on the car is that there is an intermittent issue with the dashboard where the rev counter and fuel gauge sometimes don’t work, but the fuel gauge ‘distance to empty’ readout on the central Saab Information Display is always absolutely accurate. The issue is probably a small crack in the plastic wiring tracks behind the dashboard, which sometimes prevents an earth signal. During a journey, both gauges usually come back to life after a while!
There is also a bit of lacquer peel on two areas of the car: the driver’s side front wing and the driver’s side rear quarter near the bootlid – see pictures. But this doesn’t detract from the overall impression of the car.
