What are auctions?

What are auctions?

Our secure auction platform, with optional concierge service, makes buying and selling easier than ever.

At an auction, vehicles are listed with or without a reserve price (the lowest offer the seller will take) which stays hidden. Buyers bid on the car as many times as they like until the auction closes.

When the auction closes, the highest bidder wins the car as long as their bid is over the reserve price.

Why use Car & Classic?

Automotive experts

Car & Classic's online marketplace has been helping people buy their dream car for nearly 20 years.

As car enthusiasts, we aim to make the buying and selling process simple and safe.

Secure payments

Our secure, third-party escrow process gives peace of mind for buyers and sellers. Payment goes into a separate, third-party account and is only released when both sides are happy.

This protects both buyer and seller.

Extra verification

We check people are who they say they are by asking sellers to register an account and carry out anti-money laundering checks.

This protects buyers and sellers from fraud.

Accurate listings

Auction descriptions are written by our in-house editorial team with up-to-date information about the vehicle provided directly from the seller.

All listings are subject to a full vehicle history data check.

How does bidding work?

Bidding

Entering a bid acts as a binding contract. The amount you pay if you win the auction is your bid plus our service fee which is clearly shown before confirmation.

Max Bidding

Our max bidding service allows you to put in the maximum you want to pay then bids are automatically made up to that limit.

We will send alerts and emails if you are outbid during the auction.

Maximum Bid examples

A car is listed as a no reserve auction. You enter £5,000 as a maximum bid and our platform will automatically bid for you in set increments until it hits the £5,000 limit.

A car is listed with a £10,000 reserve. You enter £15,000 as a maximum bid and our platform will automatically bid up to the reserve, and then in set increments until it hits the £15,000 limit.
