Fascinating provenance: delivered new to Samuel Tollman of the famous Tollman Hotel chain in Johannesburg
The Appeal
Introduced in 1956, the Silver Hawk's Elvis fins, long nose and distinctive grille were all intended to capture a new, aggressive phase for the cash-strapped marque. Sadly, it didn't quite hit its mark - the new car was certainly powerful, and certainly distinctive, but undeniably hard to market. Loewy's design turned plenty of heads but inspired veritably few sales - only hitting around 4,000 units. Finding any Silver Hawk outside of the UK is rare enough, but discovering a factory right-hand drive example with a manual transmission is genuinely exceptional – the vast majority were left-hand drive automatics destined for the American market.
This car was delivered new to Samuel Tollman in Johannesburg, South Africa, a member of the famous Tollman Hotel chain family. It was later discovered by his grandson and relocated to Cape Town, where a comprehensive restoration was undertaken. This was a full restoration from front to back, with thousands of pounds worth of documented invoices covering every aspect of the work.
The mechanical restoration includes a rebuilt V8 engine, brand new carburettor, new exhaust system, and complete electrical overhaul. The cosmetic restoration was equally thorough, with the car now presented in black paintwork over red leather upholstery – a striking combination that suits the Silver Hawk's dramatic styling perfectly.
The vendor reports that the car starts first turn, drives nicely, and commands real presence on the road, with 100mph performance from its small block V8. Thousands of dollars worth of new spares from the USA are included with the sale, along with a custom period-looking Bluetooth radio for modern convenience. For collectors seeking a truly unusual spot of Americana, this Silver Hawk represents a very special opportunity.IMG_3649.jpeg2.19 MB
