The Appeal

The performance variants of the Renault 5 occupy a special place in the hot hatch hall of fame. With 109 hp from its 1.4-litre engine and a manual gearbox, the Alpine Turbo undeniably sits at the sharper end of the Renault 5 range, and still garners plenty of interest nearly fifty years later. In a time when hot hatches have only gotten larger and more complicated, these nimble, analogue machines are a real tonic.
