The Appeal
The Passat B2 was Volkswagen’s entry in the busy 1980s hatchback market. Survivors stand out because they combine high quality finish with clever Audi-derived engineering. This car, for example, features the same 2.1L 5cyl engine from the Audi Quattro, albeit without the tarmac-shredding turbocharging.
Finished in gold with a well preserved grey velour cabin, this 1987 car is a plush GL model featuring electric windows.That clever 5 cylinder engine is mated to Volkswagen’s innovative ‘Formel E’ manual gearbox, featuring an overdrive 4th gear and even taller 5th gear, plus freewheel facility, to deliver excellent economy.
There can be few B2s as well preserved as this one. It is a reminder of just how good Volkswagen’s engineer and quality was compared to its rivals. A great choice for any enthusiast looking for a distinctive daily driver.
