The Appeal
The 300 TDI-powered Defender is widely regarded as the sweet spot of the marque's evolution: robust, reliable, and genuinely capable both on and off road. With a loyal following amongst enthusiasts and a reputation for longevity, these vehicles have become increasingly sought-after, particularly examples that have benefited from comprehensive refurbishment.
This 1996 Defender presents a thoughtfully upgraded left-hand drive example. Purchased from the Netherlands in 2022, it was subsequently refurbished by the respected Hayward Revive in Norfolk, with the centerpiece being a new Richards galvanized chassis—a significant investment that addresses one of the Defender's most common weaknesses. The mechanical specification includes a new cambelt, clutch, and brakes all round, whilst the 300 TDI engine and R380 gearbox combination provides the reliability and performance these vehicles are celebrated for.
Elsewhere, the bodywork has been comprehensively addressed with new galvanized body cappings, front bumper, roof stick set, and roll bar, before being repainted in Rioja red. Inside, new seats and canvas from Exmoor Trim, a full black carpet set, and four rear dickie seats create a practical and comfortable environment. The vehicle rides on five BF Goodrich K02 all-terrain tires fitted to 18-inch black Sawtooth alloy wheels, whilst an LRX-style grille, snorkel, and rear-mounted swing-away spare wheel complete the purposeful aesthetic.
The vendor reports that the Defender has been driven from the UK to Slovakia without issue, demonstrating its reliability and readiness for adventure. With only approximately 2,000 km covered in the current ownership and kept garaged throughout, this comprehensively refurbished Defender comes to market with the reassurance of an STK valid to February 2028.20251003_163908-Clive-Hayward.jpeg363 KB
