The Appeal
If your classic purchasing decisions are driven by the words ‘Italian,’ ‘thoroughbred’, and ‘extremely rare’, then we’ve got something rather special for you. The Ghibli was designed by Marcello Gandini, he of Muira and Countach fame, and equipped with an astonishing twin-turbo V6 that delivers more power per cylinder than a Bugatti EB110 or a Jaguar XJ220. Just 26 RHD Ghibli Cups were sold, of which only 23 are believed to remain.
This is one of them. Finished in compelling Blue Spaziale metallic with a black leather cabin, it is a fastidiously maintained UK RHD car in very good order. The history file dates back to the car’s earliest days and runs to 50 pages of invoices by illustrious marque names like Bill McGrath, Meridien Modena and JCT600. Notably, the car received a new engine in 2005, sourced from an Italian Ghibli Cup racing team. It has been fully rebuilt and runs at a reported 365bhp.
The vendor acquired the car in 2019 and has largely dry-stored it as part of his collection. In July 2025, it received a full service and cambelt change. The MOT runs to December 2026 with no advisories.
For too long, the Ghibli was overshadowed by later cars and an association with the troublesome early BiTurbos. Evo’s Harry Metcalfe has spearheaded its long-overdue rehabilitation. These are exceptionally rare and brutally capable cars. This one has the provenance and condition to draw collectors. The challenge for buyers is to find another.
The vendor says:
“Believed to be 1 of 23 remaining RHD cars, this is a very rare Ghilbi II and the ultimate incarnation being the 2.0 6 Speed Cup. Made famous in the UK by Harry Metcalfe, at the time of production, it produced the highest BHP output per litre of any road car. It is a real old school driver's car with lots of power, and no driver aids, and is brilliant fun. It is also extremely comfortable and a great long-distance GT.”

“This particular car was bought new by Mr A P Boyes, the Director of W Boyes Ltd, and used as his company car covering 100,000km in the first 4 years. It was maintained with no expense spared and has continued to be well-maintained since then.
“The car has extensive service history going back to 1997 from JCT 600, Meridien Modena, McGrath Maserati etc. There are over 50 pages of invoices and history as well as the original stamped service book in the original leather Maserati folder. All of the major Ghibli faults have been addressed including reinforcing the weak front chassis legs and rebuilding the steering rack (at McGrath Maserati). The original engine was damaged around 2005 and a replacement was purchased from Eurospares who sourced it from a race team in Italy running cars in the Ghibli Open Cup series. It was subsequently rebuilt by Owen Developments and mapped to produce 365bhp. The car has covered around 35,000km since this work was done.”
