A really well-presented example of the increasingly respected 3.6L XJ-S
A very clean and original car inside and out
Low, original mileage with the car having covered a mere 2,000 miles, on average, per year
The Background
The XJ-S was launched in 1975 and had the unenviable task of following the E-Type as the sporting pinnacle of the prestigious Jaguar range. The XJ-S was originally only available with the 5.3L V12 engine carried over from the E-Type. This made for a rapid but far from economical British GT car.
In 1983 a 3.6 litre option, as presented here, arrived using the all-new Jaguar AJ6 straight-six engine.
Many Jaguar connoisseurs consider this combination to be a sweet spot in the XJ-S range. The bulletproof AJ6 is an accomplished engine, and the lighter weight makes for a more agile car.
The four-speed automatic is well matched to the relaxed and capable cruising performance of the XJ-S.
The History
This appears to be a well-cared for car and has covered a mere 2K miles or so per year on average. The current owner is a serial XJS owner and has owned a number of V12’s and another 3.6L.
He considers the car to be a preferable overall package than the V12. During his ownership, since 2017, he has found the car reliable and capable in equal measure.
It is only a lack of use over the various lockdowns and a number of other projects requiring attention that he is now looking for the next enthusiastic owner for this classic British GT car.
The Paperwork
There is a good degree of paperwork included with this XJ-S. We have photographed a sample here to give a flavour of what is on hand.
The paperwork includes the current V5 in the name of the current owner, the current hard-copy MOT, the original owner’s manual and a number of interesting bills and invoices for maintenance undertaken.
The Interior
This Jaguars XJ-S enjoys a head-turning colourway of Arctic Blue over Doeskin leather. It suits the car very well and the leather interior is in excellent, original condition. The front seats exhibit an attractive, original patina completely appropriate to the age and mileage of the car. The rear seats appear to be in pristine condition.
The complementary coloured carpets are in equally good condition with no apparent signs of significant wear or imperfections. The door cards, dash cappings and headlining all present very well indeed with no noted areas of issue.
The XJ-S dash is well designed and specified. The central dial display which reads vertically is particularly appealing and a signature feature of the XJ-S. The car is very well specified in the cabin too, with electric and heated front seats, original Jaguar stereo, period trip-computer and remotely controlled mirrors.
The Exterior
The Arctic Blue paintwork of the XJ-S presents in great, original condition and exhibits a deep and lustrous shine throughout. The bodywork is straight and true, and no significant dings, dents or scratches were noted.
The glass and light lenses are in great original condition with no areas of fogging or delamination noted. There is a small stone chip present towards the offside top of the windscreen. It is not in a sight line and, as such, isn’t an MOT issue.
The 15-inch Jaguar alloy wheels are believed to be original to the car and have been refurbished during the stewardship of the current owner. As a consequence, they present in excellent condition with no nicks or kerb-rash in evidence. The 235/60R15 tyres all appear to have good levels of tread depth remaining.
The Mechanics
The AJ6 has become renowned as being a robust and reliable unit. It is not unusual for well-maintained examples to be capable of up to 250K miles before significant expenditure is required.
The current owner reports that the car has been very reliable during his ownership and has used the car in a range of circumstances without any issues or concerns.
The Appeal
The Jaguar XJ-S had a tough act to follow, being the successor to the fabled E-Type. This made for a car that wasn’t initially that popular amongst Jaguar purists. How times have changed. The XJ-S went on to enjoy a 20-year production life and well over 110,000 were sold during that period.
These cars have become sought after for their relaxed touring capability, sumptuous cabin and for offering excellent value for money.
This particular example is in lovely, original condition and is a very solid and honest car in all respects. The colour combination suits the car very well and there are no significant areas of imperfection needing imminent attention.
This is an opportunity to secure a great value British GT car in excellent overall condition.

About Max Bids
The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.
Anti-sniping
Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.
Auto-bidding increments
If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Automatically outbid immediately
When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.
Matching max bids
When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.
Pre-authorisation
We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.
What are pre-bids?
A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.
