1917 Allen Tourer

Pre-bids

Highlights

  • Well-regarded brass Era Edwardian Allen tourer
  • Believed to be one of only two examples in the UK
  • Fewer than 15 Allen motor cars are thought to survive worldwide
  • Presented in what appears to be very original condition
  • Imported to the UK in 2022 and correctly registered with a current V5C

The Appeal

From 1913, Ohio’s Allen Motors offered one of the last cars of the glorious Brass Era. More powerful, more comfortable, and with a conventional sliding-gear three-speed transmission than the Model T, the firm’s cars had a loyal following when new. Sales were ultimately stymied by the cut-price Ford and the 1920s Depression, meaning that today any Allen is exceptionally rare.
This 1917 tourer is believed to be one of only 15 left worldwide, of which we are told just two remain in the UK. As an alternative to the Tin Lizzie, it’s therefore much rarer and, perhaps, more interesting too. It is finished in black with black buttoned leather and reported to be very original. It has been UK-registered since 2022.
Power comes from the big 3,600cc Sommers four-cylinder engine, which we are told runs and drives, and benefits from a recently fitted new cone clutch which is working correctly. Eligible for a wide variety of veteran and vintage events across numerous clubs, this is a rare opportunity to acquire an intriguing and highly uncommon piece of American automotive heritage.
