The Appeal
Over its 14-year run, GAZ sold 639,478 of 21 Volgas. Technically, these well-built, rugged cars were available to ‘ordinary’ Russians, but in reality the massive waiting list limited them to state, military, and KGB use, plus celebrities like astronaut Yuri Gagarin, who owned a black one.
Contrary, perhaps, to Western expectations, GAZ improved these 50s-styled cars throughout their life. This 1966 final ‘third generation’ Soviet-market ‘21P’ LHD car differs from earlier models by its whalebone ‘Baleen’ chrome grille. We’re told the vendor acquired it in 2017 from Ukraine, then registered it in the UK in May 2018. It has been extensively restored, with an interior retrimmed using cloth supplied by the GAZ plant in Nizhny Novgorod. The photos show how well it has been looked after since all that work. The underside is in great order, and the big engine bay with its torquey 2.4L 80bhp 4cyl petrol engine is nicely detailed. We love the chrome detail and particularly the unusual green domed speedo. We are told that it runs well, having been serviced annually by a local garage.
Unmodified and garage-stored when not in summer use since 2017, this Volga presents a rare opportunity to acquire a piece of Soviet automotive heritage that is already registered on UK plates and ready to enjoy.
The vendor says:
“Volga is a solid vehicle and fun to drive. I love metalwork pressing, chrome, quirky instument panel, interior, simple engine and the fact it is iconic car in Eastern Europe. A classic car that has transported Presidents, astronauts and Hollywood stars.”
