The Appeal
TVR’s first production model, the Grantura established the marque and its reputation as a maker of engaging, lightweight sports cars that performed well on the road and the track. The Grantura was updated during the course of its lifetime, and this Mark III 1800 is one of the most desirable. It features the larger 1.8-litre MGB engine paired with a manual 4 speed gearbox, and accompanying overdrive to make cruising a breeze, Also present is the famous ‘Manx’ tail and ‘ban the bomb’ rear lights from the Ford Cortina. These later cars also underwent further tweaks to improve the weight distribution and handling, most notably by relocating the spare wheel.
This 1966 example is one of the last of the Mark III Grantura line, finished in metallic Fiat Blue, with wire wheels, chrome trim and silver ‘bumpers’ providing visual contrast. The paint finish is deep and consistent, with only the usual dimples, small cracks and gentle marks associated with older fibreglass bodywork present.
Inside, the interior is largely original, with black seats and trim lightened by the cream headlining. A wooden-rimmed steering wheel and aluminium gear knob enhance tactility for the driver. The seller states that all instruments are in good working order. The vehicle has been stored in a garage for many years, and the underside of the car is very well-presented. The car is equipped with a limited-slip differential, and the original (open, and resulting in a shorter final drive) differential is provided,
This distinctive, characterful example of TVR’s brand-defining car is now ready to be enjoyed be a new keeper.
