The Appeal
Volvo Head of Design Jan Wilsgaard’s clever evolution of the P1800 coupe into one of the most stylish estates of its era was inspired. Overnight it married the coupe’s sporting lines with the more practical vibes normally associated with the Gothenburg firm. Fuel injection arrived in late 1969, giving the final models more power and improved running from the virtually unburstable B20 2L engine.
Of the 8,077 P1800ES estates built over the final two years of production between 1971 and 1973, just 250 were built as Automatics in RHD for the UK market. This car is believed to be one of only two currently road-registered. It is a pretty example, presented in even red paint with gleaming chrome across the bumpers, trim, and steel wheel embellishers. The underside is coated in what appears to be fresh underseal. Inside there is a very smart black leather interior, likely retrimmed, paired with red carpets to suit the exterior.
The vendor acquired the car in 2019. It is said to run well and benefits from a professionally rebuilt gearbox in 2025. A very tidy and usable example of an exceptionally rare specification.
