The Appeal
Much like a Series Land Rover, the 40 series Land Cruiser is adored for its simplicity, capability and unashamedly rugged aesthetic. In an age when no-nonsense 4x4s are practically non-existent, enthusiasts are revisiting these older models, restoring them to their former glory.
The BJ40 is one of the most coveted variants of Toyota's legendary 40 series Land Cruiser. Rugged, mechanically simple and renowned for its durability, this short-wheelbase workhorse has earned a devoted global following.
This 1983 example was originally supplied in Saudi Arabia: a dry climate that tends to be kinder to bodywork and chassis, before being imported and registered on UK plates. Around 2021, it underwent a substantial, comprehensive restoration in which the entire vehicle was stripped down, with every fastener and metal component reportedly cadmium-plated before reassembly. The chassis was stripped, treated and resprayed; body panels were addressed, with the rear panels and rear floor replaced with new items, and the whole vehicle received a bare-metal respray.
Under the bonnet sits an extensively overhauled 13BT 3.4-litre turbo diesel engine producing 120 bhp, mated to a rebuilt H55f five-speed gearbox. The suspension was refreshed with new Bilstein shock absorbers and an Old Man Emu steering damper, while Steering Specialist Ltd overhauled the power steering box and West Coast Off Road fitted it. Notable factory options include a PTO winch (stripped, overhauled, and operational) and air conditioning, with the system serviced and fitted with new pipes, connections, and a condenser.
Inside, the seats were stripped, repaired and reupholstered with matching door cards, and the roof lining was cleaned and relined. A roll cage has been fitted to the rear of the cabin. Fewer than 4,000 miles have been covered since the restoration, and the vendor states the vehicle has been stored indoors and never driven in snow or off-road since completion. The vendor describes this as one of the best BJ40s in the UK.image.png860.86 KB
