The Appeal
The sheer unburstable durability of the original Mk1 Golf means it’s a surprise to realise just how long it’s been since we spotted a ‘standard’ five-door like this one on the road. Of course, as enthusiasts will know, it’s anything but standard because it’s the plush ‘GL’ model with alloys, an upgraded interior and that most 80s of accessories - headlamp washers.
Finished in fabulous Inari Silver - in reality, light metallic green - this is an extremely tidy, low-mileage, late-model car. It is also highly original with the vendor reporting that it is standard and unmodified.
The current keeper bought it in early 2023 and tells us that he has undertaken extensive mechanical work in the intervening three years. That has included servicing, new gaskets, engine mounts, thermostat, wheel bearings and calipers amongst other areas.
Now usefully MOT and tax exempt, this is a proper classic find whose auto box perfectly suits its relaxing, understated appeal.
The vendor says:
“Mechanical history under my ownership: I have done a lot, including gaskets, engine mounts, brakes including callipers, wheel bearings, thermostat etc.
“Starts and drives well; brings back the classic car feel and gets plenty of attention when on the road. i love the shape of the car, and with it being the MK1 version of the iconic Golf range.”
