The Appeal
While the 924 was the entry-level car and the 928 was the long-legged grand tourer, the 944 sits neatly in the middle of Porsche's transaxle hierarchy. Its 2,990cc inline four-cylinder, the largest series-production four-cylinder petrol engine of its time, produces 211 bhp and drives through a five-speed manual gearbox to the rear wheels, delivering the balanced, engaging character for which the 944 platform is well regarded. The Cabriolet variant, with its sculpted, flowing bodywork, adds open-air motoring to an already appealing proposition.
This example is one of reportedly just 500 produced in this specification, each said to have been distributed to individual dealerships for display. Imported from Canada in 2019, it has had just two registered keepers, the first being the Canadian dealership itself. It is accompanied by a CRS (Certificato di Rilevanza Storica) and holds ASI Targa Oro classification. Finished in black with an electrically operated fabric soft top, widened fenders and a smooth front end, it cuts a striking figure.
