The Appeal
Perhaps without the 911 it wouldn’t have taken quite as long for the 944’s qualities to be properly appreciated. This beautifully balanced transaxle Porsche is one of the best front-engined sports cars of its generation, particularly in 211bhp 3L Series 2 form.
The cabriolet arrived in 1989 and was practically hand-built. That made it expensive, which likely explains why just 5,656 were sold, of which only around 1,200 were RHD cars like this early one. Finished in black with grey leather, it is a tidy manual gearbox car with recent paintwork and new sills. The history file indicates that the gearbox was rebuilt and the clutch replaced some years ago, and the suspension was polybushed and fitted with Bilstein shocks. The cambelt was replaced in 2016, around 7,000 miles ago.
The vendor tells us the engine and gearbox are in fine working order, with strong oil pressure, and the cooling system is said to be functioning as it should. There are points to note cosmetically, but with no structural advisories on the MOT, it is ready to go.
The vendor says:
“Engine and gearbox in excellent working order. Oil pressure excellent. Engine cooling system working perfectly. 211 Bhp is still there. Excellent working condition for age.”
