The Appeal
The MX5 rejuvenated the idea of a simple two-seat roadster, but the Z3M took us back to a time when small convertibles with big straight six engines, cars like Austin Healey's 3000, ruled the roost. It's an exciting and compelling mix and explains why the ultra-rare Z3M convertible is so in favour right now.
Just 997 RHD Z3M roadsters were built for Europe, of which only 918 were the early 321bhp cars like this 1999 Estoril Blue fitted with the S50 engine from the M3 Evolution. These cars are considered the 'purist' choice because they thrive on revs and lack the driver aids added to the later model. This car began its life on Guernsey before moving to the UK in 2003. It has had just five UK keepers, with the current one since June 2024.
Despite the passage of 27 years, the mileage is still only 62,000 miles. That figure is supported by the service records, which show regular attention to 61,000 miles in 2020. The current MOT runs to May 2027 with no advisories. The result of this sparing use and low keepers is a very tidy car that appears to be factory standard. It features a smart special-order two-tone red and black interior and matching hard top.
The Z3M is one of the greatest roadsters of the last 30 years. Rarer than a Boxster, more exciting than an SLK AMG, it is a treat for drivers and this tidy early example especially so.image.png2.42 MB
