1968 VOLKSWAGEN BAY WINDOW MINIBUS
The 1968 Volkswagen Type 2 (T2) marked the debut of the 'Bay Window' generation, replacing the iconic 'Split Screen' (T1).
Known as an 'Early Bay' this specific year is highly sought after by collectors for its unique blend of modern mechanical upgrades and vintage aesthetic details.
It was the first to feature a 12-volt electrical system and a more powerful 1. 6-litre, 47 bhp air-cooled engine.
There was also mechanical overhaul which included a ball joint front suspension and independent rear suspension (IRS), which greatly improved handling over the T1.
Aesthetically, they were improvement such as
the single-piece curved windscreen (the 'Bay Window') and also:
Early-style door handles similar to the Split Screen, unique to the 1968–1970 models.
Low-mounted indicators located just above the bumper.
Crescent-shaped air intakes on the rear pillars.
This South African import is an 8-seater.
It boasts a full set of VW hubcaps and original roof rails.
The vehicle does start and run, but will require mechanical recommissioning having been parked up for some time.
The blemish on the right hand side of the front panel is literally 'skin deep' and is not structural.
This is a rare vehicle, particularly given its year of manufacture- and it's time in South Africa means it is remarkably solid and rust free for its 58 years.
This vehicle is located near Lutterworth, Leicestershire LE17 from where it will need to be collected.
