The Background

Production of the Chrysler Six started in 1924 and would run until 1935, within this time there we many different variants of the Six that you could’ve had. Whether you wanted a 2-door coupe, 4-door town car or a 2-door roadster, the Chrysler Six catered to almost every automotive need in the 1920s.

The Chrysler Six gets its namesake from the Inline-6 installed at the front, a huge 3.1l engine that propelled the car to dizzying speeds in 1928. The Chrysler Six line consisted of many different models, all of which had different numbers designations, these different numbers would usually reference how fast your certain model would go.

With the success of the Chrysler Six Series 60 models, Chrysler was able to purchase Dodge in 1928 and the Series 50 was rebranded a Plymouth. All of these names today are synonymous with automotive history and it is thanks to the Series 60 that these names are still with us today.

The History

The History of this car starts in the United States of America on the 10th of April 1928, almost 100 years ago! We cannot be sure about its history over the pond due to there being a lack of paper evidence. What we do have however is a ‘Road Act of 1920 Registration Book’, the first stamp in this book comes from 1949 where the car is residing in Bicester, Oxfordshire. A part of the country that is now steeped in classic automotive history thanks to Bicester Heritage.

We can continue to follow this specific car through its next 6 documented owners. In this time (around 1950-1966) it goes from Oxfordshire to RAF Abingdon, York, Essex, Surrey and has resided in the same ownership for around the past 30 years in the past three decades it has been through a thorough and painstaking restoration period which is why it now sits in such great condition.

The current owner's father was able to complete this restoration to one of the highest standards possible, they have done an incredible job to get it to where it is today. With it being in the same ownership for around 30 years it hasn’t been seen on the roads of the UK in a long time, this is down to the extensive restoration that has occurred during this time.

The Paperwork

With this Chrysler, the new owner will be getting a ring binder full of different bits of paperwork from the past 100 years. Including original Chrysler literature, a few modern invoices and other small pieces that just add to the provenience of this Series 62.

There are some incredible pieces of paperwork within this folder. One of the most interesting pieces is an original registration booklet with the first stamp dating to 1949, this is booklet would evolve into today's modern V5 document, but this is way more interesting to look at and is a great piece of history to document the history and whereabouts of this car.

The new owner will also be getting a lot of original period literature too, these include pamphlets about the car model, a great leaflet about ‘Ethyl Gasoline – The antiknock gasoline’ and there is also an interesting little card from one of the previous owners.

This little card is their membership to the W.P.C club who was ‘dedicated to the preservation of Chrysler product automobiles’ although this membership elapsed in March 1979 it is just a window into the previous owners of this car who knew that what they had needed to be preserved for future generations.

With such a dossier of paperwork, the new owner can have fun looking through it at their leisure. It is a great folder to look through if you are interested in the history of the automobile.

The Interior

The interior of this Series 62 Sedan is both stunning and immaculate. With enough leg space in the rear to build a small house and comfortable seating all around it is an excellent place to be. Through the restoration period, the interior has received a bit of ‘glow-up’ bringing it back to its former 1920’s glory.

The sandy coloured cloth that has been used to upholster the seats complement the exterior two-tone paint perfectly. With it not being used recently the interior is still in ‘as new’ condition and the new owner will be getting a car with an interior that has been put together by people who can only be described as artisans.

All of the little chrome details with the interior are in excellent condition with no pitting or other signs of corrosion. To prove how special and exclusive this car would’ve been back in 1928 there are even little details on the window winder handle, a small detail that could get missed at first glance, but it just goes to show how much pride was taken in the building of this car.

The important dials are set within a beautiful piece of milled metal which is so shiny you could use it as a mirror. All of the period-correct dials behind this dash are excellent to look at, the dials on the dash include your fuel level, oil pressure, amperes, and mileage. A simple dash that is beautiful to look at.

Overall the interior of this 1920’s land yacht is almost palatial. It incorporates so many parts of 1920’s design that we all know and loves today, even the interior light is beautiful to look at. The new owner will be getting a car that has experienced an excellent and thorough interior restoration, it has been completed to one of the highest standards possible and now it needs to be used and enjoyed.

The Exterior

If you are to imagine a car from the 1920’s you imagine a car that looks similar to this. A big, long bonnet with a big chrome grille with two massive headlights set on either side, running boards along the side, wooden spoked wheels and a proper coach-built body on top of the chassis. An iconic piece of automotive design, the Chrysler Six encapsulates all of the best parts of art deco design.

It is clear from photos that this Chrysler has experienced a bit of love on the outside. What was once quite a tatty looking dark blue and grey exterior has been transformed into this excellent two-tone white and brown paint job with accompanying gold pinstriping along the leading lines of the exterior to tie it all in. It sits resplendent in all its new found glory.

There are only a few parts on the exterior that still need to be put back on, but these are only the front chrome bumper, rear split chrome bumper and a spare wheel holder. But these are the only parts that would need to be re-installed.

The current owner does have a few spare parts from either this car or its sister convertible series 70, they did make mention that the new owner could have a look through these parts to see if there was anything of use, but they have just moved facilities so locating some other extra parts may be a bit more difficult.

Another small area of note on the exterior is that the offside front wing may have suffered a small incident at some point after the re-spay as there is an area of grey primer. The good thing about this though is you can see that this repair hasn’t been done quickly, the wing is as straight as any other panel and it could easily be missed with a quick look.

Overall the exterior of this Chrysler looks beautiful, sitting on its white walls and wood spoked rims it just has a perfect pre-war look. With the bonus of all of the restoration work that has taken place the exterior is not too far away from being Concours standards, which is always a bonus.

The Mechanics

This is the only part of the car that lets it down currently. At the minute this Chrysler is a non-runner, this is not because of any major issues but this was the last item on the list that sadly wasn’t able to be completed.

However, if you lift the gullwing bonnet you can see that all of the parts are there and all the parts seem fairly new, or at least not from the 1920s. The engine block has been painted in a stunningly vibrant red paint and it does look great.

If you take a look underneath the car you can see that all of the parts have been taken off, restored and the same original parts have been put back on wherever possible. The majority of the underside parts have been painted gloss black and we should imagine that whilst there it may have also had some sort of sealant applied just to keep it in tip-top condition.

Just because this car is currently a non-runner should not put you off, with the interior, exterior and even underside condition you can see that care and attention have been put into putting this car back together which should mean the task of getting it running shouldn’t be that big.

The car is in the final stages of restoration and only needs that little nudge to get it over the finish line and when it is running it will be an excellent addition to anyone's garage.

The Appeal

This is a kind of car that is not usually up for sale, with all of the modern paint, interior works, and other parts this Chrysler is now set for the next 100 years of its life. The restoration that has already taken place over the past three decades is exquisite in quality and attention to detail. This will be able to compete with the best pre-war cars within the UK.

Make no mistakes, this car only requires a tiny bit of work to get her running. With all of the other parts already been restored, there isn’t that much left to do for the new owner and with the addition of original paperwork and little details, this is an excellent buy.

When it comes to classic cars this is possibly one of the most iconic shapes and most recognisable automotive names in the world today so the new owner will be getting a great car that is sure to bring many happy memories and will be an excellent investment opportunity too.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
