The Appeal
In an increasingly competitive interwar market, what set Willys’ Knight apart from its Buick Master Six, Chrysler 70, and Dodge Victory Six rivals was its innovative sleeve valve 3L 6cyl engine. Eschewing the poppet valves of those competitors earned the quiet Willys the nickname ‘Silent Knight.’ It was a huge success, helping Willys sell more than 140,000 cars in 1929 alone.
UK and European market Knights were shipped over as knocked-down kits and assembled at the Willys Overland Crossley works in Manchester. This 1928 car’s fabric body was a popular choice on this side of the Atlantic. The bodies were built by coachbuilder Crossley using the Weymann system of fabric, wood and sealant. It creates an impressive-looking vehicle, as this very tidy example shows.
The car is a credit to its knowledgeable enthusiast keeper, who acquired it in 2017. We’re told that it was restored in the 1990s, a process that is said to have preserved the original 1928 brown leather interior. Inside and out this is an evocative machine, helped by some lovely detailing like the wooden wheels, Willys-branded luggage box and fuel can.
Unlike many of its vintage contemporaries today and in keeping with its ‘Overland’ name, this Willys is no mere show queen. The vendor has used it regularly for UK and European touring, and that smooth, silent engine is said to run well.
Technically interesting and stylistically appealing, this wonderful Willys is one of the nicest vintage motors we’ve seen in a while. It looks perfect for touring and shows. A quantity of spares is included with the sale image.png5.27 MB
