THE APPEAL

It took Ford 21 years to get around to replacing the incredible Model T, but when it did the new Model A was a huge leap forward – more conventional and easier to drive, larger and more elegant than ever before.

The Model A was offered in a wide variety of body styles and was the first Ford to incorporate the standard set of driver controls with a conventional clutch, brake pedal, accelerator and gearshift.

This one is one of the prettiest of the lot – a two-door Deluxe Phaeton open tourer. It’s in lovely order, ready to enjoy and presented in beautiful condition. It’s also one of the rarest of Model As made, from the final year of production. out of the 4,858,644 Model A’s manufactured, only 2,229 were manufactured in the final year. To put into perspective, these cars are one in 2,180, or as a percentage, represented 0. 00046% of model A’s. Nowadays not many remain worldwide and they are highly sought-after by collectors.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • Originally supplied to USA domestic market
  • Imported to the UK in 2015
  • All import duties and taxes paid
  • UK V5C
  • MOT and tax exempt
  • Restored to a very high standard 45 years ago.
  • Transported from concours event to event over a 30 year period covering a mere 200 miles (presumably just positioning the car).
  • Subsequently sold to its next enthusiastic owner in River Falls, Wisconsin, who covered around 700 miles before it headed to the UK in 2015 for the princely sum of $65,000
  • Multiple show awards
  • Kept since late 2015 as part of the vendor’s private collection.

THE INTERIOR

  • Retrimmed in smart tan leather
  • Rubber floors
  • Charming art-deco dials
  • Side screens and weather gear included

The Model A was restored some years ago but to an exceptional standard, and the dark tan leather seats have been smartly retrimmed and look fantastic.

It’s fairly rudimentary inside, with basic rubber floors and a central instrument pack, which has a gorgeous, delicate art-deco finish to it. What there is, though, is in lovely condition throughout.

It comes with a full set of weather gear including detachable side panels, making it snug and dry with the roof up. American column mounted indicators have been fitted.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Refinished in Washington Blue over black
  • Replacement hood
  • Beautiful condition
  • Lots of charming original features

Presented in Washington Blue with a Riviera Blue belt line and Tacoma Cream strip and wheels, BF 7219 was restored to a very high standard some 45 years ago. The paintwork is lovely, with a deep and lustrous shine and no major flaws. The underside looks to be in great condition, too.

The canvas roof was replaced during the car’s restoration and is in good condition, while it folds away neatly and easily with no need to dismantle the hood frame.

It sits on charming cream-painted wire wheels and all of the chrome and trim is in very smart condition. It comes with twin side mount spare wheels, deluxe side lights, deluxe wind deflector glass, a luggage rack with period luggage, a beautiful chrome search light which all functions and works, stainless footplates, tonneau cover, stainless spare wheel covers, stainless radiator stone guard and electric wipers.

THE MECHANICS

  • 3.3-litre sidevalve
  • Three-speed manual
  • Starts and runs well

Under the side-hinged bonnet, the Model A has a sturdy four-cylinder side-valve engine which starts easily and settles to a steady idle once you’ve mastered the advance, retard and floor start operation.

It runs well, engages all gears as it should and is described by the vendor as in good working order with no known issues. The engine is said to have been fully rebuilt when the car was restored.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
