The Appeal
You’ve probably never driven anything like this before, unless you were alive during the Great Depression. This 1937 International Harvester D2 Panel Van is a rolling slice of pre-war Americana, and it looks every bit the part — from its sweeping black wings to the embossed bonnet sides and that Art Deco grille straight off a Superman cartoon.
It was built in Chicago and spent its life abroad before recently being registered for UK roads, where it now serves as a promotional vehicle for a South African classic car club. The livery reads “Vaal Ou Wiele Tegniesediens” — which loosely translates to “Old Wheels Technical Service” — and frankly, that’s about as cool as old vans get.
It’s absolutely not concours, but it has character pouring out of every creaky hinge. A genuine curiosity for anyone who wants something completely different — and who probably doesn’t need to arrive anywhere in a hurry.

The Condition
For an 88-year-old commercial vehicle, it’s done remarkably well. The paintwork holds up nicely with a few age-related marks, the livery is legible and well-applied, and the panel gaps are honest enough not to be suspicious. The underside shows rust and patina — but no obvious evidence of dangerous corrosion. One wheel appears more oxidised than the others, but overall it appears straight and solid.
Inside, the two brown vinyl seats are in good order. The floor and metalwork show their age, but the charm remains intact. The dash and dials are simple, dusted with time, and functional in appearance.
