1938 Alvis 12/70 DHC

Highlights

  • In the same family ownership since 1968
  • Very rare pre-war Alvis Drop Head Coupe
  • One of only 754 12/70 cars built
  • Stored in a garage for approximately 40 years
  • Only 2 former registered keepers from new we are told
  • Large file of paperwork including service history

The Appeal

The 12/70 has an important place in the history of one of Britain’s most illustrious car makers. It was the last 4cyl model built before the Luftwaffe brought wartime car production to an end.
Just 754 left the line over three years, very few of them open Drop Head Coupes like this car. We are told that it was first registered in 1938. The vendor’s late partner was gifted it in 1968 for his 17th birthday and kept it ever since. For the last 40 years it has been dry stored in the garage you see in the photos. The vendor tells us that it has had just three keepers.
The car is finished in brown and looks largely complete. It is, as you can see, a restoration project. It is accompanied by a large history file, highlights of which you can see in the photos. It is sold with a registration document with plate GKJ529.
Although it could be used as a source of parts, we genuinely hope that this stylish rarity gets the love it needs and returns to the road.

History and Paperwork

  • Stored in a garage for approximately 40 years
  • Accompanied by a file of paperwork including service history
  • Highlights from history file shown in photos

The Condition

  • Restoration project finished in brown as shown
  • Car appears to be largely complete
  • There are obvious areas requiring repair
  • Interior appears to be largely complete

  • Rear condition is reported to be poor as can be seen in photos
  • Underneath condition is unknown
  • Interior condition is reported to be poor but with many original features
  • Condition of instruments and switchgear is unknown

The Mechanics

  • From factory this car would have a 1,842cc OHV 4cyl engine
  • The precise engine and gearbox specification is not known
  • The vehicle is not currently running and is clearly not driveable
  • Would require comprehensive mechanical recommissioning after long-term storage
  • Car is clearly sold as a non-running restoration project

BEFORE YOU BUY
This sale is subject to the Car & Classic Terms and Conditions. By bidding and/or making an offer, you also agree to the following:
The seller is registered as a private seller which means consumer rights stemming from EU consumer protection law do not come into effect. However, you are still covered by Car & Classic’s own Terms and Conditions..
We request that a non-refundable fee  be paid if you are the lucky winning bidder at auction or if your offer is accepted Please refer to our helpful FAQs and T&Cs for specific rates.
This vehicle is “Sold As Seen”, on an “As Is Where Is’ basis and without warranty. Photos and descriptions are solely for guidance purposes and it's customary to carry out a full inspection of the vehicle prior to purchase for your own peace of mind.
✓ VAT is included in the buyer's fee. VAT may or may not be included in the final bid or offer price, as specified in the listing.
We want a smooth transaction just as much as you do and as such we run all UK-registered cars and motorbikes for sale on Car & Classic through an online HPI check to verify that they show no insurance database markers for damage or theft, and have no finance owing, allowing you to bid with confidence.
✓ We also check whether vehicles are recorded as being written off as part of an insurance total loss claim at the time an advert is placed on Car & Classic and we helpfully provide write-off category labels (Cat C/D/S/N) for your assistance. However, the presence or absence of a label does not guarantee the vehicle’s status and it is always worthwhile carrying out your own  full vehicle history check before making an offer on a vehicle.
✓ Buyers are responsible for vehicle collection
or delivery. Importing vehicles may result in additional customs duties and import taxes so it’s worth checking beforehand..
