The Appeal

The Ford coupe is more than just a car. It's a staple of American culture. Throughout the years the Coupe, in its many forms, would see untold success and cement itself as an automotive icon, a legacy which it still proudly holds to this day. Perhaps most interestingly though, the Coupe would become the genesis and unsung hero of a newly emerging modified car scene we would come to know as hot rodding, a cultural phenomenon that was born in the flames of prohibition and bootlegging and still remains one of the most popular segments of car culture all these years on.
The Coupe we have here, originating from 1947, is a wonderful exhibition of hot rodding perfection. From its bold candy paint job to the sleek 4” chopped top, YMG 783 ticks all the boxes the budding street rodder looks for in their ride and stands today as a truly excellent street rod. Proudly unique and effortlessly cool, it's certainly one of the cooler Coupes out there and would make an excellent choice for someone looking to get into this immensely fun bracket of automotive culture.

The History and Paperwork

  • Manufactured January 1947
  • Imported into the UK circa 2016
  • Accompanied by an extensive volume of information and spec sheets pertaining to many of the custom and tuneable pieces on the car
  • Previous MOT certificate present from the car’s early life in the UK
  • Due to the Ford’s age and historic status, it is both tax and MOT exempt
  • UK registered with V5 registration document

The Interior

  • Quality tan upholstery throughout
  • Omega gauges with colour matched faces
  • Vintage air A/C system
  • Pioneer bluetooth radio head unit
Often overlooked on hot rod builds, the cabin of this Coupe is an absolute statement piece in its own right and is of a similarly high calibre to the exterior and mechanical setup of the car. Well upholstered with quality custom upgrades and modern touches, it must surely be one of the finest hot rod interior spaces out there presenting in great clean form throughout.
A light tan was the predominant colour scheme chosen for the cabin and works as a wonderful compliment to the deep candy red exterior. Quality upholstery drapes its way over the impressively comfortable front and rear bench seating and looks to have seen very limited use in its time, highlighting very little if anything in the way of age related marking or patina. Well upholstered door panels sit proudly on either side of the cabin and boast a matching decorative pattern and subtle chrome embellishments and door furniture. To complete the tan motif we find a quality well fitting headliner and a deep plush colour matched carpet set with protective over mats to really tie in the look.
Subtle, yet effective modifications are the name of the game here and we find no shortage of them. With the most predominant being the impeccable black and chrome dash panel, with its curved lines, vents and indentations it really is a wonderful piece and perhaps the perfect addition to the interior space. Housed within are a set of Omega auxiliary gauges all with colour matched tan faces, alongside a pod mounted tachometer with chrome cup all in exemplary condition. Other modifications include, contrasting black window frames, a Vintage Air A/C system, a more modern Pioneer bluetooth radio head unit, Dakota digital shift indicator and Grant three spoke steering wheel. It's clear to see upon inspection of the cabin that this has been a custom job of the highest standard.

The Exterior

  • Striking candy Brandywine exterior paint scheme
  • 4” roof chop
  • Extensive custom aesthetic touches
  • American Racing chrome wheels
  • Smoothed keyless entry setup
Exuberance at its finest, its quintessential hot rodding.
The exterior of this Coupe is bold, striking and undeniably beautiful, doing exactly what a street rod should do, turn heads wherever it goes.
A four inch roof chop starts off the custom exterior work and is perhaps the most notable modification upon first glance. The chop has been performed to an extremely high standard and gives the car a far more aggressive stance, further emphasised by the louvred bonnet, smoked glass and lashings of impeccable chrome trim. There is a great deal of custom work that has been undertaken here and it really has paid dividends, make no mistake, this is certainly a high ranker from an aesthetic perspective.
Colour choice can really make or break a car of this nature and thankfully a good call was made when choosing the paint for this Coupe. Candy Brandywine was the hue chosen and looks fantastic on the Ford’s excellent curved body lines, the paint is of an outstanding quality and has something of a mile deep quality to it. There are some slight areas of blemishing to be seen as highlighted in the accompanying photographic package, but this is a highly presentable street rod that garners admiring looks just about anywhere it goes.
15” American Racing Torque Thrust wheels reside at ground level and work well with the rest of the quality external trim to give great road presence to the car. Other subtle, yet effective custom touches include a frenched in rear plate holder and smoothed doors paired with a keyless entry system.

The Mechanics

  • Extensively upgraded from a mechanical perspective
  • 350cu SBC motor
  • Power steering
  • Mustang front end
Extensively modified in the name of performance gain and usability, this Coupe has clearly spent a great deal of time under the custom mechanical spotlight. Opening the louvred bonnet we are presented with a 350cu SBC (small block Chevy) V8 motor esteemed for its all round performance and seemingly endless modification and upgrade capacity. According to an accompanying build sheet, the following other modifications have been performed from a mechanical standpoint.
  • Comp 270H cam
  • 700 R4 automatic transmission with Z pack and super servo
  • 23” Lokar shifter and emergency brake
  • Walker radiator with electric fan and polished overflow
  • Heidts Mustang 2 front end with drop spindles
  • Front disc brakes and drums at the rear
  • 8” Ford rear end
  • 5 leaf springs with Hi Jacker air shocks
  • Ceramic coated block hugger headers
  • Mandrel bent exhaust with Flowmasters and 3” SS tips
  • Ididit tilt steering column
  • Rewired and hidden in frame with accompanying smart fuses
Make no mistake, this is a custom build to the fullest extent of the term, with high quality parts used throughout. As such it comes as no surprise to report that the Coupe fires into life quickly and comfortably and it is reported to provide an excellent driving experience. An inspection underneath also shows what appears to be an excellent, clean and solid car.

Summary

It's a mean, chopped, deep red street rod, need we say any more?
A masterclass in custom work, this 1947 Coupe is an absolute stand out piece which boasts high quality mechanical and aesthetic upgrades just about everywhere you look. Certainly for someone longing to get into the alluring world of hot rod ownership, this has to be a real consideration as it's surely one of the best examples out there.
